Now I'm curious about exactly what you've been flying in. It's all interplanetary, right?
And yeah, usually space battles, though sometimes we'll get into a skirmish planet-side.
They're intense, even in the smaller ones there's only a hair of difference between making it out in one piece and... not.

Are there no museums here?

[spktr]

Yes, our commercial planes are more for transporting people to far away places within Earth. They're massive and can hold hundreds of people at a time. There are other versions of aircraft too of course, but those don't tend to be for the average bloke like me.

There are! They're in a land that's underwater though, so very annoying to get into. Besides, there's no need for jobs here. You generate this realm's currency by interacting with other people, like we are now!

So like freighters. Starfighters aren't for everyone either, but even our old cargo ships are probably a lot faster than yours. Bigger too, since there's not as much size restriction when you're doing inter-galactic routes.

You ever wonder what it would be like to fly through space?

[ he has to wonder what it would have been like for him, if their positions were reversed somehow and he was born on an isolated planet like that. would he still be dreaming about the stars? he thinks so. ]

Yeah, I don't know how an economy works like this, but if everyone gets what they need then that's fine with me.
That gives you the freedom to do what you want. Like what you would have been doing if you didn't have to work at that gift shop.

Sounds like the more alien technology than what's been built on Earth. I'm not as familiar but there's definitely more out there.

And yes, of course! Who hasn't, really? Not sure I'd ever have the stomach for it but the idea is nice. Seems like a new kind of adventure.

[Steven definitely has wanderlust over these things but he never thought it would be a reality for him, so he hasn't dwelled on the genuine possibility.]

It works surprisingly well. no one feels the need to steal or harm the locals because it's so easy to generate Lore. I hardly even think about how much I have.

[volantes]

Maybe you're not cut out for space battles, but I'm sure you could handle a nice cruiser, most of them have got pretty decent grav control. I like the smaller ones, they've still got some power to them and they're not as hard to maneuver as those huge commercial models.

There's nothing else like it, you know?
... I mean, I guess you don't. But you should. It's amazing.

It seems almost too good to be true, no stealing and basically no crime at all that I can tell. If only there was a way to make this work back in our galaxies, I don't know if there would be wars at all if no one was unnecessarily struggling to survive.

Maybe one day I'll have the opportunity to find out. Even here, people have be sucked into alternate universes and whatnot because of the trials.

Well, the downside is we're toyed with monthly by the deity who runs this realm. We're her little dolls for her amusement, with the guise of self-improvement tucked in for people who believe it.

[Which Steven clearly does not.]

If we do I'm assuming that we'll have more to deal with than just flying around space the whole time, but hey, at least you'll have a damn good pilot with you.

Right, the whole trials thing.
Can't say that I'm a fan of being pulled around on the whims of some bored god or whatever she calls herself, but there's not much we can do about it, is there?

[ which isn't to say that he wouldn't try to object if he sees an opportunity, but he's starting to get an idea of what they're dealing with here ]

That's a big promise - I'll have to see it to believe it :)

Unfortunately not... Not that anyone has managed to find out. She can be tame some months and downright horrible others.

You'll see, they don't call me the best pilot in the galaxy for nothing.
But I'll go easy on you if we're flying together.

How has it been this month so far?

Anyone around here who can attest to those claims?

[there is a longer pause between responses. Steven had a pretty awful time this month.]

I'd say the worst I've experienced in the eight months I've been here.

[volantes]

Yeah, at least one person. I don't know if you've met Finn, he just got here but apparently he was here before for a while too.

Really? What happened?

[spktr]

I never had the pleasure but my brother was mates with him! He left shortly after I arrived. He's back then?

There are these wild hunts wandering about at night attacking people. I was too late to save one of my dear friends. Normally, the trials are far more... whimsical and harmless. I'd never experienced death like that before. Not here.

[volantes]

Right before me, yeah. He's a nice guy, I think you'd like him too.
And he's seen what I can do, so you don't have to just take my word on it.

[ he was not expecting that ]

Damn.
That's horrible.
Do you need... I don't know, a drink? A hug?

[ he's lost family and friends, both before and during this war, he knows exactly how hard that hits ]

I'll have to ask when I finally get a chance to meet him. It's nice that you already have a friendly, familiar face here too. I found it helped settling in with the strangeness much easier.

[It's sweet of him to offer to a near stranger, and it makes Steven smile on his end of the Relic.]

Hugs are always nice, but I won't turn down a drink either. There's a few decent pubs around here. Maybe next time we get a chance to say hello in person, yeah?

[ yeah, it's nice to have familiar faces but now he's worried about what could happen to them here

or, more specifically, now he has a reason to worry rather than just the reflexive kind that he had anyway ]

It is, but he's also... different.
He says he's been through at least one other place in the past year and as far as I knew before he was with me the whole time so, yeah, it's been interesting.

[ completely downplaying how unsettled he is by that whole concept, but it's minor compared to the idea of finn dying ]

I could use a drink too, so definitely, you just let me know when you're feeling up to it.

Is that still happening though? People getting attacked at night?

[spktr]

Oh yes... I've heard of others experiencing something similar. It's almost like they made an extra pit stop or two before coming here, which only raises more questions about what this place is.

I try not to have an existential crisis over it all.

[It is very unsettling and Steven still doesn't know what to do or think about it.]

Yes, so I'd be very careful. Make sure you have some iron of some kind on you - even something like a nail or a pan. That seems to be their weakness.

[volantes]

Right, having a crisis won't help.
We've just got to roll with the punches.

[ he can do that ]

Iron, huh? Alright.
Just what the hell are these things anyway?

[spktr]

That's a positive way of looking at it, yeah.

They're fairies. I know, doesn't sound too threatening, but I assure you they're especially vicious when they group up together. Nasty little buggers.

[volantes]

Are faeries something you have back on Earth? I've never heard of them before.

[spktr]

Only in stories and folktales, which this place pulls heavy inspiration from. Much I've run into here I'd only read about in books back on Earth.

[volantes]

[ it would make sense that if this place is taking them from different galaxies (different universes too, if what he's hearing lately is true) then it would be taking other things too. like faeries, apparently

he would ask more about those but the poor guy doesn't deserve to be prodded about it after what he's been through with them ]

Do they have books like that here too? Or is it just what you remember from home?

We don't really have many books where I'm from. Most of that is in archives, holos and recordings and that kind of thing.

They do! The libraries are full of them from all sorts of different worlds. I once asked a spirit attendant for more information about Folkmore's history and she pointed me to a shelf full of fairy tales. They take these tales very seriously here.

Or they're intentionally hiding something. Likely both.

You may be surprised to find some familiar ones floating about in one of the schools! Maybe even in a recording.

My grandfather used to tell me stories like that but I barely remember, it's been a long time. Most of the ones I was clamoring to hear about were about the Rebellion and that was history, not just a story.

If that's what this place works with then it's worth looking into, maybe you could give me some recommendations on which ones to start on so I'm not completely in the dark with these things.
I'm assuming that the books are like these devices, anybody can read them?

There's lots of historical books to be found as well! And people can ask for things from home if they want. I've "purchased" some books from home that way, with my spoon.

I'd love to give you a few recommendations!! [opening pandora's box here, Poe...] The books are for anyone to borrow, yes. I could even show you in person sometime.

[ A different kind of person might balk a bit at the enthusiasm that practically radiates even through text, but Poe is not that person. While he might not have the seemingly endless patience for old dusty texts like Rey does there was a younger, much more carefree Poe that could very much be called a war history nerd, he kind of gets it.

This is also preemptively arming himself with knowledge about a place that otherwise seems like something straight out of a fever dream.

Not to mention the fact that Steven probably needs a distraction as much as he does, and this is obviously something that makes him happy. It's kinda cute, actually. ]

Yeah, that would be great. I'm still figuring out where everything is around here, you can show me the ropes.
I'd like to read the ones you've got from Earth too, if you wouldn't mind sharing those.

Do you know what kind of limits there are on what we can ask for? Just small things?
