[Arashi was in the middle of her own sip when Mai guessed correctly and nearly chokes, blushing bright red]

Y--yes. A guy.

[After a momentary snort Mai doesn't laugh. She does grin widely but hey, she's not making fun of Arashi anyhow.]

Same here.

[Then she really does laugh as she speaks in a very lackadaisical way.]

Love is terrible. Mostly because it isn't terrible at all.

[Arashi continues to blush. she's not used to discussing Sorata or her emotions with anyone. even after Yuzuriha tried to bring up how cute Arashi looked when she looked at Sorata, she'd tried to push that down in favor of business]

I see.

[and Arashi's blush fades just a bit. it's rather...nice to know that she's not the only one]

Yes. I--the man I love. Either one of us could die any day and leave the other devastated. What of your love?

[Mm, sounded rough. Mai takes another long drink of her wine, leans back in her seat and with a long sigh:]

Aggravating.

[and she takes a long drink of wine. she's not used to discussing Sorata with anyone, not even Yuzuriha when she called Arashi cute as she saw Sorata off--when was it? a week ago? a month? time was so easy to lose track of here]

[Aggravating but hot may as well be part of Sorata's name. he commanded lightning as easily as one born to it. which he had been]

[Mai almost winces at that, all sympathetically of course.]

How any human being could be so attractive and so stupid at times but so kind and good just -- it's a mess, right?

[You get it, yeah? That feeling of wanting to choke them and make out with them at the same time?]

I'm probably taking the award for pathetic though considering it's two years later and I'd still sleep with him in a heartbeat.

Yes. It very much is. I wonder why the monks didn't insist on some measure of common sense.

[she knew that feeling all too well. she'd been at least passably interested in Sorata before he told her of his destiny. so then she tried to stay away, to make him dislike her, all to no avail. and now he knew she loved him and was even more determined to die for her sake.

and at that, Arashi chokes a bit on her wine, blushing bright red] ...yes. [after all, she'd already fallen from grace. what was a little more falling, all things considered?]

[Fall from grace. Mai watches her choke for a second time alongside the bright red blush and just gets the biggest smirk of a smile before she leans forward. The pair of them are separated by their seats of course but Mai's like a cat over here with that grin of hers.]

So he wasn't half bad at that, hm?

[and Arashi is staring fixedly at her wine glass, clutched in a trembling hand. she'd known she was being foolish before, knew that the very same behavior had left her mother pregnant and powerless.

now, like her mother, she was powerless. but apparently not pregnant, which was for the best]

...he was. Quite considerate.

[Mai has always been an observant creature. At the fixed stare and the trembling hand she backs off, leaning back against her seat and not making a move to note the other woman's nervous behavior.

They're here to drink and relax after all. Mai's not in the business of harassing people to cause them pain.

She ends up humming gently at that reply before her grin softens and she replies with obvious warm fondness to her words.]

Yeah. So was mine.

[she'd been foolish in falling for Sorata, especially since he seemed so determined to die for her sake. but slowly, like a stream slowly wearing away at a stone, her defenses had lowered more and more until she had fallen, despite herself.

until he nearly had died protecting her and she couldn't not tell him that she loved him]

I am...glad for you. [and she misses Sorata more than she can say]

I'm glad for you too.

[And she means it, honest. Then she sighs.]

Maybe drinking makes me sentimental. Sorry, I don't like to talk this openly at home.

[she's trying to act normal. but she really had no context for being with people other than the rest of the Dragons of Heaven or Kaede at Ise Shrine]

I think so for myself as well. I...do not let myself speak of this at all back home.

It's kind of nice and really weird at once, right?

[She gestures her glass in Arashi's direction.]

You don't have anyone here to judge you though. I'm definitely not going to anyhow.

[and she takes another drink (not one of her careful sips) of wine]

I suppose so. And thank you for being understanding. It's simply...a lot to discuss for a wide variety of reasons.

I get it. Hey, if you've got anything else on your mind you'd rather discuss, go for it. I was just going to sit and drink wine alone, maybe brood too, so this is a nice change.

[intemperant]

I--it's hard to know where to start. It's all tangled together, me, my--Sorata, and the end of the world.

[maybe the wine has loosened her lips, but there's an equal if not better chance that deep down, she wants to talk to someone objective about all of it]

[Okay, that gets a surprised look out of her.]

Sounds pretty serious.

[she takes the last of her wine in a gulp and holds out the glass for a refill]

It is. It's the most serious thing that ever existed. I was one of those who decided whether humanity would survive or die. But I---I put my emotions ahead of that and now I'm here.

[maipokerface]

[The refill is automatically given as Mai listens intently.]

... I've got to say that's a whole lot of pressure.

[oh, thank goodness]

...it is. But I've known since I was eight.

Well at least you got a head start I guess but still...

I suppose? I would rather have known young than have it be a surprise when the time came.
