She's a third of his size. He routinely carries her like she's just a small child, despite her wearing a full suit of armor. Although, I suppose she's nearly as vicious in battle as he is.

Sounds like that might make people underestimate her, even considering the suit of armor. 'She's fine, she's no one to worry abou--aaaaack!' and so on.

Yes, they do happen to underestimate her, but not just because of her size. She's really a nice, kind woman who takes her calling as a cleric of Sarenrae very seriously. But, she's as deadly in battle as the rest of us.

That's really kind of amazing. I mean, I can't exactly picture the pastor of the First Methodist Church going to battle. But in your world, it's normal?

Oh, well, she's not like that all the time, but priests are generally the ones who take care of the temples while clerics travel to spread the word of their gods and paladins take up whatever cause their god has given them. The clerics and paladins need to know how to fight, of course, or they'll end up dead. Doesn't help their god much, does it?

That's so much cooler than my world. It must be a relief, to serve one's God and be able to fight to defend Them at the same time. That's way beyond anything I've heard of, outside of the Crusades.

I personally wouldn't know. I don't follow any of the gods of my world. I think they're all dicks.

Well, that seems to be common amongst all of the gods? Like the bigger dicks they are, the more followers they'll get.

Yes, I've realized that. Sarenrae is actually one of the few gods I can respect, and she has so few followers that my friend literally spends a great deal of her time trying to restore her worship.

So she used to be worshipped, but isn't so much anymore? That's got to be hard work, trying to get people to believe again.

It happens from time to time. Gods go in and out of fashion, depending on how much proselytizing their followers do. I imagine it's always been that way. Plus, a lot of her temples were ruined. Hard for people to come and perform the rituals of their gods if their houses of worship are demolished.

That makes a lot of sense. It's like, when Greece or Rome were considered the center of the (white) world, their gods were worshipped. But then other religions sort of pulled attention away and all that's left of the Greek gods are myths and stories and what's left of their shrines. It's sad to think about. I hope that your friend succeeds.

That sounds rather close. A god's power is proportionate to the amount of worshippers they have.

Yes, absolutely. But there's merit in trying to bring the old ways back. After all, Christianity--the predominant religion where I come from--stole so many things from pagan rituals and slapped a new coat of paint on them. But I get the feeling that it's not uncommon to do so.

You're talking to the wrong person. I admire Pike for what she's trying to do because she's really adamant and she's a good person, but it holds no appeal to me. My brother, on the other hand, is really interested in talking about gods and their ilk.

Don't worry about it. I'm always looking to learn something new because I never know what can help keep me alive in battle. However, my interests lie in a different direction than even my brother, despite us being twins.

I'm sorry. I'm more than a little embarrassed to admit that I don't have any idea of what the battles may involve. Jake has tried to protect me from them and Edward really wants to protect me. But I try to tell them both: I'm a part of this, whether they like it or not. And the more I know, the more I'll be able to protect myself along with my dad and all of my classmates. I think Jake's close to cracking, as much as I hate pushing him to this point.

A lot, they involve a lot. However, my friends and I are very well trained and have the experience to get involved in them. So, if you aren't trained, I think it's best that you listen to your friends and let them protect you as best they can.

Or demand that they train you to protect yourself. That's the only way to not be a nuisance.

I want to learn how to not be a nuisance, but I don't know where to start. I'm just an ordinary squishy human and Jake and Edward are anything but.

Perhaps you can start here. You can always learn how to use a weapon to defend yourself. I am trained in a few fair number of martial weapons. And it's never too late to start learning something like that.

And don't let anyone dictate what you can and cannot do. I don't care who the hell they are. If you can't defend yourself, learn. Don't lean solely on someone else. They won't always be around.

That's a good idea, especially given the whole reaching your potential thing. Maybe my potential is to be someone who can watch Jake's back and not just him always watching mine. It bothers me since who knows what might happen while he was busy protecting me. I don't think I could do a sword, but I think I'd like to try archery?
