Charlotte still loved him. I don't know that I would have had that restraint, had she not. [ Mayerling does not know if he would have the same restraint were someone to hurt Sharon again the way she's been hurt in the past. Though he knows she's strong enough and willing to defend herself, that capacity for rage and retribution dwells within him. Not merely for justice, no, justice he could live with far easier, but bloodlust taints so many things, including anger, even righteously felt, toward humans. ]

I do not mean to negate the points you make, for they are good, but to say such a thing makes it easier to lose control, makes it easier to feel as though I have conquered this problem, that the possibility is rarer than it actually is. It was only after six thousand years that I lost control of my bite. The battle is a constant thing, never truly won, and I shall fight it every day of my existence I spend living with humans. Trench and Folkmore both present difficulties in the scale of humans that I live with that I have never faced before, and I would be a fool to discount it. Even my parents, who taught me my beliefs, could not stand to stay within Trench, for it was too much for them. [ It is no insult to them or disrespect that they would not have been capable to keep themselves from biting people, had they stayed, had they washed up on the shores. Sometimes it's hard to believe he managed it in Trench.

Sharon's preparations make Mayerling's heart sing in love and pride. He's glad that she has thought ahead, that she has plans for how to handle him. It means as much to him as the rest because he doesn't know how he could live with himself if he bit someone in Folkmore. ] Thank you, Sharon, from the bottom of my heart. It means the world to me, and I have faith you would not hold back on me, much as it might pain you. It is yet another balm that having you here provides me, to know it rests not on my shoulders alone.

I figured as much. [ Love complicates shit, Sharon knows that better than most. It kept her from killing Dahlia, after all. Charlotte didn't need to lose her father despite what he may have deserved. ]

I know, Mayerling. You can't conquer something that's a part of you the way bloodlust is but I do think you should pride yourself on your strength. You are a warrior in more ways than one and I love you for it. [ And just like any battle won isn't the end of the war, any battle lost doesn't topple the centuries of wins he's had. If he will not pride himself on it, she will for him. ]

You're welcome, love. I'll do whatever is necessary. [ And hate every moment of it. ] And then I'll be there for when you return, to remind you that a slip-up doesn't erase all you've accomplished prior.

I am honored by your words for they mean a great deal to me. I promise I am not tossing them aside as worthless when I know you say what you mean, what you believe, not words meant merely to prop me up or inflate my ego. [ Though it is difficult for Mayerling to have pride for how he controls his bloodlust, there is one matter on which he has great pride when it comes to intimacy with his human partners. The ability to worship their body, to lavish his attention between their legs, and not take pleasure in the femoral artery so near... of that he has pride. ]

I wish I needed not to burden you so, yet loving me comes with that burden. I cannot separate it from myself, and I trust you more than I trust anyone else in all of Folkmore. [ It's a stronger, greater trust even than he has in D, for D did not love him the way Sharon does. It's easier for the dhampir to do what needs to be done that way. ]

My words will always be genuine, Mayerling, even if I am saying them to prop you up or inflate your ego. [ That particular skill of his can make her forget her name or that people like to take walks in the neighborhood. It's more than worthy of pride. ]

I know. You have never let me down, not even when influenced by outside sources. Your strength of will is incredible, and you always follow through on what you say you will do. I merely wish this burden were not one of the ones I must share.
