That

makes sense, actually, but it's so far from what Flynn had assumed during that time that it takes him a minute to make sense of it.

Just a few weeks before he'd gotten the assignment, they'd had that last big stupid fight. Flynn doesn't even remember what started it. Maybe it had been brewing for months, sparked by countless biting comments and dismissals, barbs designed to piss each other off. Yuri smelled like alcohol and resentment, and everything Flynn said seemed to make it worse. That night Yuri had yelled, and Flynn had finally snapped and yelled back, worn down by months of sneering from the other knights and being ignored about almost everything he saw and so many sleepless nights, borne alone.

It had felt good to finally just hit him, Flynn remembers, but by the time they'd stopped the fight had gone out of him, and he'd slumped back to the castle in the early hours of the morning thinking it's finally done.

[ The memory surfaces for Yuri, too. Except he'd thought, maybe, it would help. Beating the shit out of each other always helped. It let off steam, it let Yuri get out of the cage of his own life for a minute, to focus only on Flynn and his fists and the way his body moves.

[ Stupid, the way his own tension breaks, the way he snorts down at his Relic, the little grin spreading unbidden over his face. Yuri is so stupid and he always does this, makes Flynn laugh when he shouldn't. ]
