Some of the most absurd scientific studies use these terms, when in truth they were done for the hell of it. Did you know a group of scientist decided to test 'Cocaine Tolerance in Honey Bees'?

The study? It was to analyze the response to abuse and mechanisms of addiction, so they could find a way to stop it in humans. I think it's still ongoing.
