1980s, that definition, that inspiration, got applied to a style of music, more broadly in the categories of alternative (not popular with most people) punk/postpunk (rejecting mainstream values) music.
Dark morbid lyrics. Often considered creepy or eerie by most people.
Dark, mostly black clothes. Dark makeup. Black or dyed black hair.
