Short version is easy.

Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead.

Which gods change. How they die changes. Some things don't. They change the world, and they're gone. The gods come back but not the people they were before they get awakened.

Not all that easy. Why the cull?

Gods, people have been discussing that as long as we have records. Anywhere from their life energy being necessary to change (or save) the world to they wouldn't if the bloodbaths and battles didn't happen. Ninety years is long enough you're not likely to see more than one cycle if you see one at all. Hard to get definitive on that timescale.

First year's usually pretty good. The second one things go nasty.

You've seen a cycle, then?

The person peddling the whole 'battle against the terrible darkness' and world could be consumed by ninety years of darkness if the gods lose line tried to sacrifice a kid, so yeah it's lost some credibility.

It was still going before I came here, in that ugly phase.
