We have competitions to make sure everyone who plans to Night Hunt is ready and able, as well as for status and respect.

Well, team sports are sort of like that! People engaging in athletic competitions, and the winners do get a certain amount of status and respect from their peers and their fans!

The Balls Deep coliseum was a place in the Forgotten Realms where one such game is played.

The game used to be called "throw the ball, catch the ball, run it down the field," but I'm pretty sure that now, after we won the championship, it's officially been renamed "Glennbowl." The new name came from a friend of mine, actually! Glenn Close.

As for the name of the town... You know, I'm actually not sure?

Oh, well, technically Earth is my home, not the Forgotten Realms. I am from there originally, but I don't consider it my home anymore.

But! We do have a very similar sport on Earth, called Football. It's just not as fun because you can't turn into an animal to fly the ball into the end zone.

You got it! Do you have any requests? I can wild shape into pretty much any animal, as long as it's something I've seen before.

You know, no one's ever asked me that before! I'm not really sure...

I do do bear a lot, but I've kind of got complicated feelings about that one.

Wombat is always fun! And useful, too.

Sure, but probably not any more than that. I can only do it twice a day.

Oh! Well, thank you, that's very nice of you. In that case, we can start with bear and wombat the next time we see each other, and then do other animals another time.

Though... My wild shape behaves a little weird, here...

Qi exhaustion isn't a good idea. I figure even if you don't use qi, whatever you do use behaves roughly the same. And we don't know what will be expected of us here, so it's best if you can keep one transformation as a backup each day.

It's not exactly like qi, but it's similar enough that the same principle applies. You're right, I should conserve my magic just in case I need it for an emergency.

Qi, though... Are you a monk?

Well, ever since I've got here, I've had these wings. Even when I'm human. And whenever I try to wild shape into an animal form, I keep the wings. Even if the animal I'm taking the shape of doesn't normally have wings. So I would be a bear with wings, or a wombat with wings.

I'm a cultivator. We work with qi to form golden cores. The stronger our core, the better able to put ghosts and beasts to rest so they stop bothering ordinary people. That involves a lot of meditation, honing one's body and mind. Each sect has their specialties and secrets, but generally speaking we all study the arts to help us with our cores.

[ Never mind the fact he doesn't even have a core anymore but shhhh ]

Wings are useful! Are they strong enough to fly with in each form you take?

That's interesting. My druidic training involved a lot of meditation, too.

[ Most of which Henry did begrudgingly, under his father's judgemental eye. He's worked hard not to associate meditation with his dad anymore, but it still carries a certain weight in his mind. ]

I'm not sure... They're big enough that they could probably carry me as a human, but I haven't been able to successfully take off yet. I'm not sure if they'd be powerful enough to lift me as a bear, though.

Maybe if you work on making them stronger, you'll be able to fly in any form! That could be very helpful.

Maybe! Though, in the meantime it'll probably just be easier to wild shape into the form of a bird.

You know, I could transform you into an animal too, if you wanted. Again, it's not something I can just do all the time whenever I want, because it's a powerful piece of magic and it takes a lot out of me, but if the need arises, I can do it.
