December 2023 & January 2024 Test Drive Meme

December 2023 - January 2024 TDM
Introduction

Overflow TDM post found here

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

This Test Drive meme is open to all.

Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain canon items from homes especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.

and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.

🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.

Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.

[ Prompt OnePrompt Two]

Thirteen Knows What You Did Last Summer .
Content Warnings: School Detention, Time Not Passing, Forced Reflection/Confession, Potential Violence

Welcome to detention. Star Children, whether they're new arrivals to Folkmore or old hands, find themselves sitting at two person desks in a library. Perhaps there's only two Star Children, perhaps up to four or five. Regardless, each Star Child has a slip of paper in their hands which spells out why they are in detention, a secret detention slip no one else can read. Which, whew, because the reason any Star Child is in detention is for something they've never been punished for, something they might reasonably have thought they got away with, something they know was wrong.

The door to the library opens, and Kuma Lisa enters. She explains that Star Children will be in detention for four hours, and by the end of detention, they will need to reflect on what they did and express contrition. The headmistress gives no further guidance before leaving and closing the doors behind her.

Four hours is a notable chunk of time, but it's not so long, is it? Surely it's possible to wait it out without making good on the assignment… Or perhaps it's enough to write about it in one of the notebooks on the table in front of each student, without explaining it to another soul. Star Children are welcome to try whatever they want. However, they may notice an oddity with the clock. Namely, no matter how many times the second hand ticks around a circle to mark a whole minute, the minute and hour hands don't progress. It's the same minute over and over and over—

Detention is four hours, but how long four hours takes is entirely up to the Star Children in detention. Read every book in the library. Throw a dance party. Get high. Pull weapons out of the books. All matter of non-magical weapons. Nothing immediately happens upon pulling those weapons—no monsters to make detention less boring. Unless people make progress reflecting on their transgression, communicating about it with another Star Child, and showing penitence for it, time won't pass. Reality warps to stay in the same minute, minute after minute, hour after hour.

What's it going to be? Never ending detention or personal accountability?

However long it takes, it only takes four hours in the realm of Folkmore.

A word of warning to those who grabbed weapons, they will be attacked on their way home after detention. They will be attacked by creatures out of storybooks. Star Children will need to know the literary weaknesses of these creatures, good luck, or the help of someone else coming along who does know their weaknesses. At least there's some excitement in the day after four long long hours.

🦊 Star Children, new and old, in groups of 2-5 are in detention for something they did wrong & haven't been punished for.
🦊 Kuma Lisa explains detention lasts four hours, and people have to express regret for what they did by the end.
🦊 Time doesn't pass unless Star Children make progress toward that assignment.
🦊 It always takes four hours in Folkmore time.
🦊 Star Children who draw weapons from books during detention will be attacked on their way home.

To Prank or to be Pranked .
Content Warnings: Theft, Glitter Bombs, Minor Power Nerfing

There's a problem with the nonexistent mail delivery system in Folkmore. Gifts are being delivered to residents' addresses—their correct addresses, even if they live in the woods—but those recipients, written on a fat cream label, cannot pick them up, teleport them, or otherwise move them under their own power. These gifts sit in garish and contrasting colors that make certain to draw attention to themselves. Hello, here they are.

Anyone else can pick these packages up, from the person next door to a stranger walking by. There's so many gifts around it's easy to pick one up, remove the label, and go on one's way. Few people are home all the time, and even if they are, what are they going to do? Pick it up themselves? Ha! It's free real estate. Star Children with abilities to see inside the packages can see something they want badly within as extra motivation to go for it.

When Star Children open their ill gotten gains, these packages explode in a glitter bomb that coats everyone within a ten foot radius. This glitter is impossible to wash out, magic away, or otherwise remove for twenty-four hours. Walk, swim, fly, or otherwise go about with glittery evidence of the crime committed.

Almost always. If it were guaranteed, where would the fun be in that?

The rare fortunate criminal or the original recipient, helped by another Star Child, will receive an item from home. This may even be a weapon or magical item. Those who receive an item will stop receiving gifts on their doorstep, whether they stole the gift or received it from a package addressed to them. They can keep stealing other people's gifts, but they will only receive a glitter bomb from then on.

Mischievous Star Children can even prank each other by changing the label and redelivering packages to someone else. Should that person get help to bring the gift inside, it still isn't their gift, not really, so it too will explode in glitter.

🦊 Gifts appear outside Star Children's residences, even those without residences.
🦊 Recipients cannot pick up the gift but any other Star Child can.
🦊 Almost all stolen gifts explode in a glitter bomb that leaves glitter for 24 hours.
🦊 Star Children can receive an item from home, even a weapon or magical item.
🦊 Star Children can prank each other by changing the labels/moving the packages.

Bigger than others...

[He can't deny the truth of it. It was probably the biggest decision he'll ever make in his life, and for better or worse, it's one he has to live with. He glances sidelong at her; there's something undeniably warm and comforting about her smile. She really seems to know what she's talking about.

That's when it occurs to him-]

What about you?

[She's stuck in detention with him, too...]

You want to know mine?

[ There's something a little more casual to that - or an attempt at it, anyway, since it doesn't fully hit the mark. After all, Minako knows she'll have to tell him either way. It seems to be their only ticket out of here at this point.

So without trying to fight it more than they already have, she shows her slip of paper to him.

It reads:
You failed your princess. ]

That's someone I have to protect. No matter what.

[Failed her princess, huh... is that the same person she's protecting now, does she get another chance? Or is it to make up for failing before? It's hard to imagine Minako failing at anything. She's so cheerfully confident in everything she seems to try. That isn't the right thing to say, though, too dismissive of whatever happened. She's human just like him- they all screw up sometimes.]

...Want to talk about it?

[He's not sure if only admitting it is enough, but either way, he's here to listen, just like she listened to him.]

cw: talk of (witnessed) suicide

[personal profile] reloves 2024-03-04 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She shrugs a little bit. ]

We probably have to.

[ Minako knows the fox - or likes to think she does, anyway. There's no way that being would let them off so easily. Not to mention it'd probably be kind of crappy to be all cagey about this when Casey was a whole lot more open about his own statement, right?

Maybe she can just talk about it without fully revealing her secret. While still protecting Usagi and Usagi's secret identity. ]

I.. um. [ Minako starts, but then goes quiet again, having to think really carefully about her wording because of the above. ] I have a princess. It's my duty to protect her. It's always been.

[ She's let it define her entire life. ]

She fell in love with someone she shouldn't be with. Someone she couldn't be with. It was forbidden, but.. she was stubborn. She refused to give up on that love. Even though things got so bad that it triggered an entire war between the place she came from and the place he came from. I tried so hard to protect her during all of it, but-- the man she loved died, and when she saw that, she..

[ Minako swallows.

She looks like she's trying really hard to keep a brave face, but she has to swallow at this part-- hard, too. ]

She killed herself. I-- I was right there. I saw it happen. I couldn't stop her.

[His eyes widen, horrified. He'd watched his uncle kill himself to open the time gateway, and it was one of the worst feelings in the world. He can't imagine how it would feel to watch someone who he'd vowed to protect do it for- for a lost love-? it feels so pointless. Then again, he's never been in that position before, not exactly. He lost his whole family but not a romantic partner like that. Is the despair in the aftermath so different? Does it depend on the person?

Doesn't feel like the sort of question one asks, even to the goddess of love.]

Minako... [He hesitates, reaching out, and if she allows it he'll rest a hand on her shoulder.] I'm so sorry. That must have been so awful... it isn't your fault, though.

[That princess of hers, she'd made a choice. You can't let yourself be responsible for other peoples' choices, surely. He blames himself for closing the portal, but Leo's choice put him on the other side of it.]

[ Minako seems to allow the touch, not shrugging it off or moving away from it. Perhaps there's the tiniest little wince, like she didn't expect the physical comfort, but she settles already after no more than a split second. ]

.. it is my fault.

[ Her voice sounds so decisive as she says it. For all her talk about Casey and his own scrap of paper, she seems like she's fully made her mind up about this one in the exact opposite direction. ]

It was my duty to protect her. No matter what. So if something happens to her, it's my fault. [ Regardless of whether or not she could've stopped it.

She feels like she could have, though. Probably. If she had made some different decisions, if she had been harder on Serenity back then-- ]

You can't always protect people from themselves. Or... even most of the time.

[He wishes it weren't so, but that has been the norm in his experience. You can try. That's all you can do. Try your best and hope they'll allow it.]

I'm sure you did whatever you could... you're not the type to do anything halfway. It's normal to feel guilty, but you can't take on all the blame.

[ The girl exhales.

When she turns her head to look at him, she's smiling. But it's an odd kind of smile, really. It looks like one, but the longer you look at it, the more you might realise that there's something wrong with it. There's something empty about it, like a part of Minako's genuine emotion that's supposed to be in it is missing. ]

Thanks, Casey. [ Her words might make it a little more clear what's wrong.

She means the gratitude, but at the same time definitely is not addressing any of the core issue underneath it - the very thing he was telling her. Like Minako instinctively can't help but reject those words, unable to internalize them. ]

You're always really sweet to me. You know I super appreciate that, right?

[That feels so... final. He can't really blame her; most people don't instantly believe it (or change their minds) when they're told they didn't cause a thing they blame themselves for. It doesn't work on him, why would it work on anyone else? To see her smiling like that really hurts. The compliment is far more bitter than sweet. It really doesn't feel like he's done anything worthy of praise, here. Not when he couldn't help her.]

I'm... sorry I can't do more. [He wants to. He wishes he were better at this, that he could just wipe away this supposed sin and bring her true smile back. Life's never as easy as he wants it to be. The people who've been hurt by the past still suffer for it, into the future.

It's not fair.]
I won't stop believing in you. So... so keep trying, okay?

[ Minako sees the clock's hands finally moving again.

It's the reason she moves to get up from where they had been sitting together as they talked, and by the time she's standing on the own two feet, she's holding out her hand towards him, offering to help him up too. ]

Hey, what are you apologizing for?

[ The smile on her face still has the same edge to it as it did a moment ago. ]

This isn't your fault. None of it is. If anything, I'm just glad to have a good friend like you here, you know? [ It's a bit of an odd contrast. The smile still seems so hollow, but.. the words feel a little different, especially those last few. Like Minako - despite some obvious issues she's having here - does mean those words as she says them. ]

[He accepts her hand and the help up, though he's hesitant to let go right away. He's glad she's here, too. They may not have been able to fix anything, but at least they didn't have to go through any of this alone.

There's so little that can be done, but...]

Can I hug you?

[He's gotten so used to asking, with Hunter. He just hates the sight of that hollow smile. Hugs are so much more powerful than words, sometimes, and none of his words are doing much here.]

[ She blinks.

For a moment something about the girl mostly just.. looks kind of surprised. Like she didn't see that coming at all, and that means she needs a moment to process it, especially when she was in the middle of shoving down so many of her own feelings in this moment. ]

Uh, I mean-- [ It's where the slight hesitation comes from. Usually Minako is so quick to agree, even likely to throw her arms around someone else first after they ask that.. But right now her reaction seems a little slower, a little more awkward. ] If you want to? I never mind hugs. You probably figured as much.

Sorry if it's weird to ask. Hunter's not so good with surprise contact, so I started doing it with more people to get into the habit of asking first with him.

[He offers up a sheepish smile, then gives her a big, firm hug. They both deserve it, after what just happened. He won't linger so long that it's uncomfortable, but it's enough to be felt.]

You're a really kind person too, Minako.
