October & November 2023 Test Drive Meme

October - November 2023 TDM
Introduction

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

This Test Drive meme is open to all.

Welcome to Folkmore's bimonthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon and work like "mini-events". For new players and characters, you can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Current players are also allowed to have in-game characters post to the TDM so long as they mark their top levels ‘Current Character.’

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

Playing and interacting with the TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain canon items from homes especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

🦊 New Star Children meet the Fox still in their worlds, and she brings them into the new realm of Folkmore. As you follow her, your body begins to change and new characteristics emerge. These may stay for a while, or perhaps they will hide away after. And during all of this, the Fox explains to you where you will be going: to Folkmore.

and then... you fall like a shooting star, falling to the land in a burst of starlight.

🦊 Experienced Star Children are already familiar with this time of the month. There are shooting stars all across the sky, and some fall to the land, which means the Fox has brought new arrivals. These newly arrived Star Children will face some tests, but Thirteen wants the more seasoned residents to participate as well.

Perhaps you follow the falling stars on your own, or perhaps the Fox simply teleports you there, but it appears you too will be part of this.

Tides doesn’t have a farmer’s market. However, it does have a regular artists’ fair. Spirits—and Star Children—can set up stalls to offer art they have already made or to make it right before people. On the spot commissions! It’s a great way to see a wide spread of the art available in Tides, on rare occasions even Jewelia’s own.

Within the artists’ fair is a makers’ square where everyone is invited to join an artist in learning to make some kind of art. It might be painting and wine. Lithography. Embroidery. You name it. Seriously, feel free to put a suggestion in the box of what Star Children would be interested in. The artists leading the space don’t all teach at Jewelia Academy. This could be the only chance to learn from them!

This time it’s making salt water taffy. Spirit Children can learn how to complete the process from start to finish with a bit of an arm workout. If they aren’t interested in or cannot handle the arm workout pulling the taffy, they can help a spirit wherever they’re interested. There is any flavor Spirit Children can imagine to flavor their taffy, even ones only found in their home worlds. Share a little culture!

Star Children may keep up to half of the taffy they make, but the rest will be offered to everyone coming through the makers’ square in the artists’ fair. Perhaps it’ll encourage other Star Children to make their own! Star Children, whether they make taffy or simply take free samples, will find that eating taffy can have an effect on them.

Eating taffy made by Legends will give Star Children color changing eyes that give away their mood, just like Legends. Eating taffy made by Myths will give Star Children horns, claws, or a tail that grows larger when they react more logically and less emotionally. Eating taffy made by Familiars will give Star Children animal features. These effects last from one-six hours.

Eating taffy made by Spirits has no effect at all!

🦊 Star Children can attend an artists’ fair and make salt water taffy.
🦊 Eating salt water taffy made by Star Children will give temporary features of that kind of Star Child.
🦊 Eating salt water taffy made by Spirits has no effect.

Content Warnings: Pocket universe, dungeon castle crawl, forced relocation

One of the many food carts in Tides serves homemade ice cream. The fox spirit serving it promises that it will provide a jolt of inspiration—even to Star Children who cannot eat. Even holding a cone or cup of the ice cream can jolt someone’s imagination, the fox says. It’s free as part of the welcome to Tides, but no one has to accept it, not even to hold. The fox spirit won’t cajole anyone, and Star Children can go along their way.

At least a few hours later, long enough to have forgotten the offer or to get frustrated by the lack of promised inspiration, Star Children fall down down down into a painted, sculpted, sidewalk chalked, or otherwise artistically bent world. They are as artistically made as the rest of the world around them. They match it, as do their one to three companions who arrive with them. They may be friends or strangers. They are compatriots in this strange world.

Whether starting deep in the bowels or high in a tower, this artistic world is that of a castle. A unique castle to each Star Child host. Elements of its design, decor, and mechanisms tie back to a creative endeavor of the host. For the castle is a direct manifestation of whatever project the Star Child host experiences creative block around, whether that’s art or science or anything else. It’s baked into the design. Not only that, the castle is under attack! Dragons or monsters or knights, oh my! Whatever attacks, the very creative idea may crumble if it doesn’t get solved.

Star Children who ate the ice cream will have an easier time shoring up defenses, buying time to think, and even experiencing a breakthrough moment of inspiration. Any companions who ate the ice cream will have an easier time helping the host. Regardless, the only way out is a breakthrough or to see the idea fall to uninspired ruin. Which will it be?

When a group breaks through, they return to Tides with up to four nearly identical dollhouse castles. A miniature doll of one party member will be in each dollhouse. The doll will also have a miniature version of an item from home. Take it from one’s doll, and it becomes lifesize. It may even be a magical item or weapon.

🦊 Star Children will be offered homemade ice cream by a fox spirit.
🦊 Star Children will be transported into an artistic world set within a castle under attack.
🦊 1-3 other Star Children will join the host.
🦊 Escape by breaking through the host’s creative block.
🦊 Star Children whose groups break through will receive a personal item from home. It may even be a magical item or weapon.

"Sounds fine to me," Steve answers, because he doesn't realize that Hel is a person and not a place. But then - "Falcon?" he asks. "No, I've got one. It's at the armory back in the compound. Tony gave the shield to Sam?"

That must've happened in the future.

Which means - well what does that mean? Because last he remembers, he still didn't have it at home.

He frowns at Steve, confused by his question. "That is a strange question... are you some figment of this place? A trick by Hel?"

Surely Steve would know that he gave the shield to Sam and that Tony was dead. It still stung Thor to think of his heroic sacrifice. The grief has dulled but is not less heavy. So much loss...

"Who are you?" he asks, ominous thunder rolling in the distance.

"Whoa, Thor, come on, it's me," he says, trying to think through this timeline thing. "We're all from different points in time. Sometimes different universes. Here."

He holds out a hand, but then pauses to throw a few more undead back, and comes back. "Touch my hand. I'm not an illusion."

He does not want to get in a fight with Thor - that's going to be a mess.

Different times and different universes might have seemed poor excuses before everything but Thor is familiar with how time and space could be twisted and changed.

He takes Steve's hand which is firm and real and warm in his. It's familiar and he feels a rush of relief to know he's real.

"If you are a trick you are a very good one," he says, firmly shaking Steve's hand. "But I will trust you as I always have."

Well, there's only one other thing that he can do to prove to Thor that he's the real Steve Rogers, but he doesn't feel like he needs to pull that particular gambit, thankfully. He's hoping to keep that one a secret from Thor as long as he can, because he knows Thor feels possessive over it.

"Great." He nods, solemnly. "But I owe you a lot of explanation, once we're through with this."

They absolutely have plenty of time to talk later, Steve can almost promise that, and if not, then Thor won't even remember this place.

They can discuss the timelines and their knowledge after they're done beating the hell out of Hel's forces. Thor believes they can fight back any forces. It would be nice to have the Hulk too but they'll do their best together.

"I cannot wait to hear what you know," he says as he swings around and sends a white hot bolt of lightning down the hall to tear through attacking soldiers.

"We'll talk over a drink and celebration!" He then throws himself into the swarm with gusto knowing that Steve has his back.

"Sure thing, pal!" He feels so good fighting alongside Thor. The two of them really have a great rapport in battle, such that it's hard for them to fake it.

Hulk would be nice, too.

He isn't joking - there are so many forces coming towards them, and it seems endless. "Do you have to deal with this a lot? I thought Fenrir was chained up?" he asks, drawing on his very limited understanding of norse mythology.

"Freed along with my sister when my father died," he explains as they fight through the horde. "She is very bloodthirsty and wishes to take Asgard for herself then the rest of the realms."

Thor kicks an undead in the chest to send it sprawling back. "But I have fought this battle. You spoke of time travel. Have I gone back to fight it again?"

But it's not quite the same battle. He does not have the same companions fighting by his side. There is no Asgard anymore. How can he be fighting this again?

"No, this whole place is just a reimagining of your memory," he says. "It's not an illusion, but it's not really happening, either. I don't know, usually what the fox wants us to do is generate enough lore to leave," he explains.

He recognizes that it's not a good explanation. "So either we hold hands or something, or you start telling me secrets. That usually works." He dispatches a few more soldiers but they're really starting to pile up. "I think we need to move to a different location."

--And also, "Is your sister in this memory?" She doesn't seem like a friendly. Is Thor the weird one in his set of siblings?

The simpler answer would have been 'this is magic' because Thor has seen magic do many wonderous things. He is not going to argue with Steve right now over the nature of reality as there are more important matters to tend to.

"I would assume so," he says as he takes Steve's hand in his and tugs him down another hallway. Steve will keep up no matter how fast he runs. "She invaded Asgard during Ragnarok. Have my people not sought shelter on Earth yet in your time?"

They round a corner and then go down another hallway to an open courtyard Thor remembers from his childhood. "Get ready!"

He takes a firmer hold of Steve's forearm and then simply lifts his friend and throws him towards one group of undead. Thor trusts Steve can react and adapt to being thrown well enough. He turns to his own group of undead to fight.

It is magic, but Steve's understanding of Asgardian magic is mostly trickery, and he doesn't want Thor to think it's that. "No, I - haven't heard from you in a few years, not since you left after Ultron. If we see Tony later, he's from my future. Loki too, maybe."

But he's not sure if Loki would be on their side in this fight, so he doesn't really want to run into Loki.

Steve goes charging toward a group, though he's kind of bummed he won't get to explore much of Asgard. Getting to see his friend's home is a nice little treat, even if he just threw a bunch of soldiers into a door and broke it.

"Wait - Ragnarok?" he asks. "Isn't that supposed to destroy Asgard?" He knows maybe four Norse myths but Ragnarok is kind of a big one.

"My people live in Norway now," he explains as they continue their fight. "Because Asgard was destroyed when I ordered Ragnarok unleashed to stop my sister. She would have brought as much destruction as Thanos had she been allowed to live."

Steve has missed a great deal. No, the better way to say it is he has not lived it. He is the past and does not know what is coming. Poor man to hear such tragedy.

"I am sorry you never got to see it."
pursuitofcappiness: (um what repeat that)

[personal profile] pursuitofcappiness 2023-10-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm getting to see it right now, bud," he says, smiling. That's something nice about this place - yes, everything's temporary, but nothing's really impossible, either.

"So, you think we stand a chance against your sister? Because if not, we've gotta come up with some secrets fast." Or just, things that would get them to connect, he supposes.

"Tell me about your childhood here." He knows Thor loves to tell stories.
