April 2023 Test Drive Meme

April 2023 TDM
Introduction

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon. You can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Each TDM will provide a scenario for how characters arrive in-game that particular month.

Playing TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain canon items from homes especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are allowed to have in-game characters react to TDMs via the Network or make a log with the prompts. Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

worms.
Content Warnings: hallucinations, poison, giant worm

One minute you were a falling star, but as your body reforms you become aware of one important detail: it's friggin hot.

That's because you've landed in a desert! Yes, you have had the misfortune of landing in Cruel Summer, the hottest and arguably most dangerous part of Folkmore. Lucky you!

The first bit of good news is that you're pretty sure you can see a train station off in the distance, although it's extremely difficult to judge exactly how far off due to the flatness of the terrain. The second bit of good news is that you have awoken with either a canteen of water, or an umbrella to keep the sun off. The third bit of news - good or bad, depending - is that you've awoken near another Star Child. Whoever this is will have the opposite gift than what you received; if you have water, they have an umbrella, and if you have an umbrella they have water. Well, you know what they say: sharing is caring! Undeniably the water is a touch more important, so hopefully whoever has it isn't a colossal dick.

As you trek through the desert towards the distant structure, you will notice periodically the air off to either side of you will shimmer. You may dismiss it as merely the heat playing tricks, but if you choose to investigate you will find mundane weapons like swords, guns, shields, etc.

At some point as you walk, you will feel a tremor beneath your feet. It grows in intensity until suddenly the sand sprays everywhere as something bursts forth from the earth below!

Wavering above you is a blood red worm. It is large - end to end it runs about thirteen feet - and its segmented hide is tough enough that rocks bounce right off of it. You might have more luck with bullets or bladed edges, but it's still going to be a tough fight. It also boasts some impressive offensive tricks; its mouth is ringed with many rows of fangs, and itspits a thick yellow acid that will corrode your skin and your weapons if you're not careful. If that wasn't enough, during your fight you might here a sudden brrrrrrrrrapppp! as the creature farts lightning at you. Hilarious... until it knocks you to the ground.

You would do well to work as a team to take this monster down. You and your partner might have powers or skills that could come in handy, or maybe you're quick on the uptake when it comes to any new abilities afforded you by your new role!

If you defeat the worm in battle, a golden chest will appear. Inside of it are items from your homeworlds - these rewards are especially likely to be any weapons you owned back home.

But hey, maybe you're a lover, not a fighter. There's no judgement here in Folkmore. You can outrun the worm instead if you're both fast and clever - finding any terrain that is more rock than sand will give you a decided advantage.

Once you have either defeated or escaped the worm, you will find that you come upon a small group of tents. Under their shade are first aid supplies, and kiosks manned by fennec foxes offering water, food, and shaved ice. Nice!

so scarlet it was.
Content Warnings: emotional trauma, impalement

Giant death worms aren't the only danger in the desert, they're just the most obvious.

Even if you avoided the worms entirely, you still have to make it to one of the train stations in Cruel Summer. As you trek across the dunes you will gradually become aware that over the sound of wind and shifting sand you can hear someone singing. You feel an urge to follow the sound to its source.

This song could be anything - one that exists in your world or others, or just a melody spun in the air for the first time. Whatever it is, it is heart rending; tears may spring your eyes as you follow the sound, precious moisture falling to the thirsty desert ground.

The singing is coming from a cactus. It is taller than most humanoid creatures, tinted purple and pink at the tips, with abnormally long spines. Its song reminds you sharply of some deep loss from your past, and at the same time inspires a terrible compulsion to go to the cactus and sink against it.

And what a relief it is, to embrace that melody and feel the spines slide easily through your flesh to pierce your heart. You do not bleed. By some strange alchemy, your heartache drains from your body as liquid, filling the cactus and causing its flowers to bloom and its song to cease.

You could very well stay pinned there, dying a slow death of desiccation, but lucky for you Star Children are all over the place this time of the month and someone is bound to see that you need help.

Trying to pry someone off of the cactus is impossible. The key lies in the flowers - they must be removed. When they are, sweet liquid will spray from the place where it had grown, dousing the rescuing Star Child. With this impromptu shower comes psychic flashes of the painful memory that has trapped the victim.

Once all of the blooming flowers have been removed, the cactus will retract its spines and release its prisoner. There will be no physical wounds left from this encounter.

You will also discover nearby that there is now a golden chest. Inside of it are items from your homeworlds, although none of these items are weapons.

Thankfully, you should be able to reach either Oozlum or Obambo Station without further incident. At either of these you will be able to get some water and supplies, as well as get the hell out of Cruel Summer.

II!

[ Sucrose's situation seems pretty dire. She's small, and that worm is real big and real mean. Who knows what would happen if it actually caught up to her? Fortunately -- or maybe, unfortunately?? -- that option isn't going to come to fruition, because her savior arrives with no sword or shield, but a spiked shell and what appears to be an umbrella in his left hand and a basic looking wand with a yellow jewel in his right.

Of course, she probably can't see him yet, considering he's actually behind the worm, but she can probably hear the maniacal laughter and feel the heat of fire of all things as Iggy breathes the element out and uses his magic to enlarge the flames. The worm lets out a screech as its backside gets scorched, which only causes the teen to laugh even harder. He's laughing so hard, in fact, he might actually tip himself over.

He flashes both the girl and the worm a fang filled grin and pushes his glasses up with the end of the umbrella as the offending creature suddenly stops and whips around, head going back and forth between two potential victims. ]

Ahahaha, this is GREAT! And here I thought I'd be really bored~. Just how many of you are there, anyways? You might as well give up, because I'm gonna catch you, and when I do...

[ Probably best not to finish that sentence... ]

[...That's a talking turtle with a wand.

Okay, she'll process that later. Until she could get around to that, she would appreciate this opening and focus instead on the fire that was inflicted upon the worm. She could work with this.

Sucrose swept a hand and would leap in to help by piggybacking off the flames that licked the tough hide of the worm, triggering a swirl reaction. What were smaller flames were now even bigger flames, spreading and intensifying in a blink with a blast of wind.

She needed to stop running. She's faced plenty of terrible things before that wanted to eat her. Besides, if she managed to get this thing down, there were plenty of things she could take off the creature to answer her growing questions later.]

Keep that going... please...! I can swirl the flames bigger!

[But didn't she smell something akin to ozone earlier? Was a storm brewing? If there was some electro to go with this fire, she could trigger another reaction and amplify it!]

[ He's getting that reaction a lot today--

As his sudden new companion calls out a request, he obliges. He's not the friendliest soul, but he's not entirely against teamwork, either, especially against a mutual threat. And so, he flashes her a big ol' thumbs up, before pulling the same trick as before. He inhales, and exhales large flames. With the wave of his wand and several bright green ribbons of light and stupid shapes like circles and triangles engulf the flames, making them grow in size. ]

Go for it! Hey, have you seen these things before? Be careful, they--

[ fart out lightning he's about to say, when it happens. The timing couldn't be any more hilarious, really, and he's cackling so loudly that it almost drowns out the sound even as he's knocked onto the desert floor. But this comedic timing also serves another purpose -- the lightning is right there, so close to the flames that all it would take is just a little push of magic... ]

[He obliged and she was relieved, never entirely sure of how a stranger would take to a request. She hadn't sounded demanding, she thought, and she was glad to have conveyed her wish in an amicable manner. Another little tick mark in the scoreboard of being able to talk to people!

Sucrose watched the flame magnify via this creature's catalyst(???), but her long green ears twitched from their hiding place in her hair. What was that he was saying? Be careful they-]

Wh-what the-!?

[Okay. Ah. Normal bodily function, but she was sure being able to exude electro in that fashion was grounds for seeking a medic. Still, her realization caused a small flash in the gold of her eyes. Pyro + Electro...!]

Stand clear...!

[She brought her hands out and swept them upright. The winds kicked up sand before slamming both elements together. The Overload reaction created a sizeable explosion that engulfed the worm, but Sucrose wasn't about to stop. She knew her output was diminished without her catalyst on hand, so she had to compensate a certain percentage.

She stepped back and thrust her arms outward, and in a blink, lacy wings of light erupted from her back from her sharpened focus. Another blast followed, coupled with a scream from the worm. Come on, come on...!]

[ The carnage and the chaos is something that Iggy absolutely thrives in. Other than the weird Fawful-disease incident all of... a few hours ago at home, it's been terribly quiet and peaceful. And while the majority of his siblings seemed okay with that, it was making him a little stir crazy, so to speak. Granted, he's glad it all worked out in the end, and he'd very much been in the middle of a huge celebration party when he suddenly was thrust into the middle of a very hot, homicidal worm filled desert, so maybe he hadn't been that bored just yet, but, details.

He's still laughing his head off as he gets up, and he waves his wand, about to send off another barrage of spells and fire when the girl lets off some pretty powerful magic attacks of her own. He's left in awe for a few moments, in fact. ]

Whoa, that was really cool! [ Ah, but it's go time. He quickly scrambles out of the way of any potential fallout as wind and sand go flying everywhere, and he has to squint for a few moments to see the outcome. The worm is screaming and writhing and he's pretty sure this thing has to be close to being finished at this point. It's on it's last leg, so to speak, at the very least, as its massive body finally succumbs and falls heavily onto the sand directly in front of the Koopaling. When it gives one last exhale, Iggy begins to clap and jump up and down excitedly. ]

Wooo! One down, like, ten million more to go probably! Good job, by the way, that was totally awesome to watch!

[ He can be friendly too, dammit. When he feels like it. And when no one is watching. ]

[Cool!? Oh, but... this was nothing compared to some of the results of her recent tests on the elasticity of slime condensate into-

The worm fell and she cautiously approached the figure when it breathed its last.]

O-oh, it's... just my anemo element is all. So many other people can accomplish so much more with it.

[But she adjusted her glasses before she reached out and neatly plucked a paper-sized "sheet" of worm skin that had crackled a bit from the sharply increased heat. Some of it seemed intact, though. This was fine.

But Sucrose startled when a golden chest merrily popped into existence in the sand nearby.]

Wha-!? Here, too?? Gosh, they really do just pop out of thin air...

I dunno, that was super impressive! Goooood job~!

[ He thinks so, at least. He's about to say something else, when suddenly, there's a gold chest. He blinks at it, before bursting out into another fit of hysterical laughter. ]

Seriously! This happens all the time at home for me, too! It's great! Maybe this place isn't so different after all...

[ Except it's way different, his siblings are definitely not anywhere to be found, and he's generally on his own. It's fine. Probably. There's a little skip to his step as he makes his way over to the chest and casually prods it with a foot -- a test to see if it's some sort of troll thing that has teeth or something, and when nothing happens, he glances back at his companion. ]

I think it's safe! So, do you wanna open it, or should I? Being a gentleman [ SNORT-- ] I'd say ladies first! But uh, also, we don't know what's in it, so, maybe together?

[personal profile] swirldottir 2023-05-20 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, he poked it and nothing terrible happened. It might be safe, considering she'd never heard of any trapped chests that didn't involve strange runes showing up around it and summoned monsters appearing.

No runes? No monsters. Safe box.

She nodded.]

Let's open it together. I don't know what sort of treasure a giant worm would protect, but the chest is very elaborate... there must be something of value inside!

On... on three, maybe?

[She lay a hand against it.]

One... two...
bahahahaha: (pic#16328460)

[personal profile] bahahahaha 2023-05-29 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
...Two and a half...

[ It's a stupid gag, honestly, but he laughs at himself anyways because this entire situation is just so funny that he can hardly stand it. Really. ]

Three!

[ And together with his new companion, he pushes the heavy lid open, revealing...

...a second pair of glasses and a wrench, of all things. At least, on his side of the chest. He doesn't seem too disappointed, though, picking both items up with a declaration of 'yoink'. The spare specs are tucked safely into his shell, and the wrench is haphazardly twirled between his fingers. ]

Score! What'd you get?

[Wasn't the first time she'd heard something like that, and she had to pause and keep herself from getting japed into opening the box early.

Thankfully, the three followed, revealing what lay inside. The box was safe, thank goodness! Let's see: Glasses, wrench, and...]

M-my Sacrificial Fragments!

[It was an ornate purple book with a soft glow, bookmarked by an ornate white feather. She took it into her hands and hugged it to her chest in relief.]

It's my catalyst! A gift from a friend... it helps with magic. This should make the worms or any other monsters out here less of a problem.

Wait... I had this before I met the fox. Was this some sort of test??
