[ John gingerly sets the backpack down and tries to situate it so that it's as open as possible but also a little bit sheltered. ]

Okay Harold... this is it. If you're not a human, have a good squirrel life, okay?

[ The sound catches John off guard, and his head snaps up. ]

Oh! Is that your kitty? ...we should probably close the door before there's an incident.

[kyley_b]

If you're human, Harold, just stay there until we come back and we'll get you help.

Yeah, good point. C'mon.

[Kyle ushers John inside and closes the door. The cat-erpillar isn't super fast, but it's quicker than he'd have first guessed and he doesn't want Harold eviscerated on the front porch.

The cat-erpillar is on the back of the couch. It looks like a very white persian cat; the fact that it's so fluffy almost hides the extra legs. It regards John with brilliantly orange eyes.]

That's it. It's really stupid looking.

[heirlift]

Oh my god! What are you talking about? It's adorable!

[ John moves forward cautiously, one hand out for sniffing purposes. ]

Hey there, lil guy! Don't worry, I'm a friend.

[kyley_b]

[The cat-erpillar stretches out its too-long neck and sniffs, sniffs... and then rubs its head all over John's hand. Then it sneezes on him.]

It gets boogers everywhere.

[heirlift]

Haha, ew!

[ He wipes his hand off on his jeans and goes right back to petting the cat-erpillar. A few boogers aren't going to deter him. ]

I think you should keep her.

[ Is it even a girl? John, inspect your biases. ]

[kyley_b]

Yeah? I'm not sure I could get rid of her if I tried, to be quite honest.

[The creature in question starts purring.]

Ohhh, she likes you. I think it's a she, anyway. I hope so. Only boy cats spray, right?

I... have no idea? I don't know much about cats.

[ But John is going to be adventurous and see if it will let him pick it up. ]

So what do you think you'll name her?

I should check. My dad has a cat addiction, I dunno if it's hereditary? But I wouldn't try it even once, so... yeah. Should be fine.

[It does. It's kitten sized aside from the fact that its body is longer than it should be. It snorts as it is lifted.]

[ Oh John is pleased as punch, and is going to hold this cat-erpillar like the baby that it is. ]

A... cat addiction. Do I want to know or not?

[ His immediate thought is one of those cat hoarder ladies, but for some reason he also thinks that's probably too mundane. ]

Well. An addiction to cheesing. You know, where you huff cat spray?

[Like this is common.]

Ew, bro, what? That's nasty!

[ John hugs the cat-erpillar a little closer, as if trying to protect it. ]

How would you even-- no! I don't want to know! It can't be good for the cat no matter what, and I am not letting you do that to Arwen!

[ The animal hasn't had a name for the past two minutes, so John has gone ahead and decided on one himself. This is a habit with him. ]

I know!

What?! I did I wouldn't! I don't want to! I'm saying my dad did it!

We're not naming her Arwen!

[heirlift]

It's still gross.

[ He pouts for a hot second, but there are more important issues. ]

What are we naming her, then? I think she looks like an Arwen. Ethereal and regal...

[kyley_b]

Not disagreeing! I'm telling you a traumatic family memory here, dude! [Kyle, all of your trauma is hilarious.

The cat-erpillar snorts again. On John.]

Yeah, really ethereal. She snores, you know.

[Kyle hums thoughtfully.] I was thinking of calling her Booger. But you want regal? Princess Booger. Or Wilfred Brimley. Princess Wilfred Brimley.

[ John is just going to very pointedly move on to the more important issue of pet names. ]

Those are crappy names! [ He looks down at the cat-erpillar. ] Meow twice if you want to be called 'Booger'!

[ As if John's one to talk and Emmy's full name isn't Her Majesty The Empress Von Scuttlebutt. ]

Why are they crappy?! They're cute!

[The cat-erpillar waows... but only once.]

Okay, well. How about... Princess Apnea? Captain Hamburger?

[ John narrows his eyes. ]

I guess those are acceptable. But you're on thin ice, mister.

[ John really needs to quit while he's ahead. This is stupid.

He gives the cat-erpillar one last snuggle before setting it gently down on the ground. ]

Are you going to take it to the vet? Maybe they can do something for the sneezing. And tell you if it's a boy or a girl. If that matters.

[kyley_b]

Pffft.

Oh, yeah. Good idea. I didn't realise we had a vet. Although I think the sneezing is from her having such a smushy face.

[He walks over now that John isn't holding the thing so he can kiss his cheek.]

Hi cutie.

I mean, we probably do...

[ John doesn't respond for a solid few seconds, then snaps back into the present moment. ]

Oh! You mean me... heh. I thought you were talking to the cat.

[ He levitates himself a few inches off the ground just so that he can reciprocate with a quick peck on the lips. ]

Since I'm here anyway, there's something I wanted to tell you. Wanna sit down?

[kyley_b]

Seems likely.

Yeah you, dummy.

Mm. Sure. I actually wanted to talk to you, too.

[Kyle has a seat on his couch. The cat-erpillar has apparently decided that they're both boring, and inches toward the kitchen.]

So. I've thought a lot about our arrangement. And I know last time we really talked about it I was a little... a little emo? Yeah. But man... I am nuts about you. So I want you to know I'm gonna actively work on the fact that I'm both insecure and totally jealous.

[heirlift]

[ John settles in comfortably, tucking himself against Kyle's side. This revelation is a bit of a surprise, and he doesn't try to hide it. ]

Oh... well. About that?

[ His ears press back, and he drops his gaze to the floor like it's suddenly the most interesting in the world. ]

Um. You don't have to be jealous anymore. Dave got sent home. And I was going to break it off with him anyway... so wins all around, I guess?

[kyley_b]

Wait, what?

[He squeezes John tight and then tries to catch his eye.]

Dude. I am so sorry. He's your best friend no matter what else, and that's gotta be hard. Can I do anything to help?

I can't even process that second part yet.

[heirlift]

No, it's fine!

[ But he will never say no to hugs. He glances up and gives a smile, and it's 90% of the way there. ]

Maybe it's wrong of me to say, but I'm... relieved. I don't think it was working with us. It never felt quite right, you know what I mean? He didn't do anything wrong or bad. I think it was just timing and his real boyfriend not being here and me not wanting to be the backup boyfriend, wondering each day if Karkat would show up and it'd be over, and realizing that maybe I was making you feel kind of the same way...

[ He inhales deeply and tries to get his thoughts a little more orderly. ]

I'll always love him in some way. You don't go through the end of the world and four different universes with someone and not feel something about them. But I'll have forever to figure that out with him. I only have you for right now. So I just want to focus on that.

[kyley_b]

I don't think it's wrong. It's okay to have complex or conflicting feelings about things.

[He hugs John a little closer, surprised into silence for once. 'Backup boyfriend' really does describe it, and he's weirdly never heard it put so succinctly. He won't even argue that it wasn't accurate for their respective situations, because it was.]

It's good to love him, dude. I hope that part never changes, because losing your best friend sucks ass.

[He falls quiet, just holding John close as he overthinks everything for a moment.]

I would be lying if I said that I didn't feel kinda like someone just said, 'hey, your problem went away!' right now. Like now my friends can't give me shit, my anxiety is lessened, and I don't have to worry about the consequences of inevitably punching a Strider in the face.

But I do feel bad, also. Like I don't deserve this.

I mean, the chance of punching a Strider still isn't 0...

[ Sorry Dirk. John loves you too but he can't say he's never once been tempted. ]

It's fine. You don't need to feel bad. Honestly? I think this is the best outcome we all could have hoped for. Nobody had to get their feelings hurt, and we can blame the fox. Or thank her. Maybe both?
