Premise + Arrival
Welcome to Folkmore
Premise and Arrival
Once upon a time, there was a mischievous Fox who wondered why foxes were always written out to be the bad guy in a story. Was it not the Fox's cleverness that was envied by the hero? Was it not the fox's quick wit that got them out of the jaws of death? Was it not their beauty that people envied? Did people come to forget that the fox had its own trials? Since when did people believe they knew the entire history of something at a mere glance?
Nothing is ever what it seems. No one is all the way bad just like they are not all the way good. Heroes are useless without villains and villains wouldn't exist without heroes. Then there are the people who are just trying to survive. The people who just wake up in the morning and take that first step out of bed to live another day. The people who go to a gas station to work for eight hours before coming home and eating a frozen meal out of the microwave.
The universe is not built out of one more than the other. Everyone is with potential and who is to say what that potential is worth? How many people are robbed of their potential just because someone said no?
The Fox wondered this on and on until finally, she decided to create her own realm of possibility: Folkmore. A magical pocket dimension filled with every kind of environment one could imagine ranging from frigid tundras to scorching deserts. She inverted reality and began to pull from other universes to give sentient beings a fighting chance at meeting their full potential in ways that their original universes would never allow. The Fox believed that she was maintaining absolute balance in the universe, that she was providing a service, a challenge...
She wanted to see what legends were made out of. The source of myths. Of stories gone untold, unexplored, misunderstood. Who could these people be if only they were allowed to focus on themselves? What kind of love would they find? What would their goals be?
Was there even such a thing as true evil or true good? Were people guilty of neutrality or was it a service to those around them? There was only one way to find out.
The Fox comes to you. You're in your own world, whether asleep in bed or in the middle of a battle when she appears. A brilliant, bright red Fox. She brings with her the smell of autumn and a warm summer breeze and the bite of winter and mud of spring. The world fades around you and you're filled with a powerful urge to follow her.
You step out of your own body. You see yourself as you step away, you can feel that you're leaving a version of yourself in your homeworld, a version that will keep going. But this part of you, this special part of you comprised of all the worst and best parts of yourself, has been discovered and is being lured away.
You don't know how long you follow the Fox. It feels like it could be for a few minutes or a few days or a few years. She walks through every kind of terrain, every kind of weather, and you follow, feeling none of it, feeling an odd sense of calm contentment to follow the Fox wherever she leads. You can feel parts of your body changing. Maybe growing wings or sprouting horns, feeling a shift deep within your soul. Starlight fills out where your body should be and slowly, you manifest physically into your usual body.
The Fox begins to explain where she is taking you. To Folkmore. That you have been arranged as a Legend, Myth, or Familiar. She explains some of the basics of the world. You can't speak much right now, but if you have questions, she somehow senses them and answers them well enough. But for the deeper stuff, she tells you that you're just going to have to find out on your own.
You arrive in Folkmore as a shooting star. Streaking across the sky and falling to the land in a burst of starlight. You take shape and soon, you regain all of your regular senses and your body. You're dressed in the outfit you left your world in, with nothing on you except for a Spoon and a new communication device.
It's time to get started.
The Spoon
Every character is provided a Spoon upon arrival. This is basically your new ultra credit card! Spoons collect a small amount of Lore Energy every time your character interacts with a sentient being. This can be through network or log interactions or daily interactions. The more interactions your character has, the more Lore in their spoon. The spoon is used for purchasing goods and services throughout Folkmore and serves as the only form of currency in the world.
Running low on funds? Say hello to your neighbor and ask how their day is going! Need just a bit more Lore for a friend's birthday gift? Strike up a conversation with the local farmer!
Spoons can be lost or stolen. People can steal your Lore (with player permission) and it's no different than if someone stole your credit card. Your character would have to either find their original Spoon or get a new one. Spoons are custom-made from natural materials and infused with a character's energy. This sounds fancy, but really, it's a matter of carving up a new spoon and your character holding it and thinking really hard about the spoon belonging to them!

The Relic
The Relic operates exactly like a smartphone: it allows video calls, messaging, texting, and the transfer of photographs. It looks like a Nintendo 3DS and can be highly customized with unique colors and charms. The Relics will manifest in an appearance that perfectly suits your character's tastes!
Anything you can do on a smartphone, you can do on your Relic! The network is known as Foxi and seems accessible no matter where in Folkmore you may be. The phone is indestructible, but you can lose it. Lost Relics will eventually find their way back, either to their Star Child's person or residence. Relics can charge through electricity, sunlight, or moonlight and maintain a long charge. They can be hacked by those highly skilled in technology or with technology-based abilities. Characters can use the phone anonymously or with a username. The first time you use your Relic, you will get a screen asking if you would like a tour of how the Relic works to walk you through the basics. Relics have accessibility options to allow use for blind and/or deaf characters.
Any media that is accessible in our own world can be accessed through the Relic. This includes our world's music, movies, tv shows, memes, and more. Please be considerate of fourth walling and always ask permission ahead of time.
