AUGUST 2022 TDM
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.
All TDMs are game canon. You can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Each TDM will provide a scenario for how characters arrive in-game that particular month.
Playing TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain canon items from homes especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.
Current players are allowed to have in-game characters react to TDMs via the Network or make a log with the prompts. Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!
TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.
Content Warnings: snakes, cultists, optional violence.
FALLING DOWN LIKE PIECES INTO PLACE
FALLING DOWN LIKE PIECES INTO PLACE
A breeze with the crisp smell of dying leaves caresses you awake. You sit up to find yourself in the middle of an apple orchard, rows spreading out in all directions. Mouth watering apples hang from the branches, and nobody will stop you from taking one. You can wander the orchard as long as you like, but eventually you will find yourself emerging into the front yard of a little farm. There’s a red barn with perfect white trim set far back, and to one side of the yard is a kiosk modeled to match the barn. This is staffed by a woman who sure looks a lot like the fox that brought you here.
On the side of the kiosk are advertised a few different items: pumpkin spice lattes, hot apple cider, cold alcoholic apple cider, and hot chocolate. The cider, you will be informed, is made on site. (But you have to be of legal age to be given that hard cider!)
There are two other things advertised: APPLE PICKING and a SCAVENGER HUNT.
“You need a buddy for those, though,” the woman running the kiosk will tell you. “Lucky for you there’s plenty of people you can pair up with.”
If you elect to try the scavenger hunt, you and your partner will be handed a piece of paper. On it reads the following:
TAKE A PICTURE OF THE FOLLOWING ON YOUR RELIC! :)
- YOU HOLDING HANDS WHILE YOU GO DOWN A PATH
- FEET WITH AUTUMN LEAVES
- SOMETHING YOU THINK IS TRULY BEAUTIFUL
- A GENUINE SMILE
“When you’re done, bring it back here and show me,” the woman instructs you. “You’ll get a prize if you do.”
It’s an easy enough list, right? Although you have to follow the instructions - you really DO have to find something you genuinely think is beautiful, and that smile can’t be forced! Those might require opening up to your partner a little bit!
If you succeed in the scavenger hunt, you will be gifted with an item from home.
Now, what if you decided to go apple picking?
You will be given a bucket. “Be careful to only pick apples from the trees in the rows,” the kiosk woman tells you with a secret smile. “You don’t want to bother the old trees off the path.”
Yeah. That sure sounds like a challenge, doesn’t it?
If you do stick to the orchard proper, you will be able to pick your fill of apples. All of them are crisp and sweet and delicious. But at some point you will see the other trees.
They’re both huge and old, standing on two sloping hills just past the orchard rows. One of them has apples red as blood, and the other apples gold as the sun. In the shade of these trees are weapons sticking half out of the earth, as if they were carelessly buried many years ago.
If you pick one of the red apples, you will find that you are suddenly besieged with huge snakes. They are as big as anacondas and an inky black that absorbs the light, with eyes the same red as the apples. They aren’t poisonous, but they bite and they crush, so you’ll have to fight them off at least long enough to run like hell!
If you pick the golden apples, a crowd of people will silently begin appearing from the orchard. They are all wearing animal masks… and they are all holding hand scythes. Uh oh. You’ll have to fight them off in order to escape! If you don’t manage that, well, in some places it’s traditional to have a big ol’ sacrificial bonfire…
All the weapons below the trees are non-enchanted items, but you may keep them.
Content Warnings: Optional themes of identity and school trauma.
IMAKEOVER MAKEOVER
SAVED BY THE BELL
IMAKEOVER MAKEOVER
Thirteen believes passionately in education. There are, after all, five academies in Folkmore all catering to different types of learning. While these academies are open year round, it becomes apparent if you walk through any of the districts housing shops that back to school is definitely a thing.
A new school year represents a chance to learn more about the world, and about yourself.
Also? It’s a great time for a makeover!
Yes, step into any of the shops selling clothing and accessories anywhere in Folkmore and you will find yourself passionately invested in helping another person discover who it is they want to look like! Do they want to look cool and aloof? Warm and approachable? Are they an e-boy or a cottagcore witch? Punk or prep? You two can figure it out together!
As you shop together you will find it easier and easier to open up to one another, sharing who it is you want to be.
You’ll also be able to score a sweet outfit. Nice.
SAVED BY THE BELL
Wander into any school in Folkmore and you will find a handmade poster instructing all new students and faculty to report to the auditorium. Normal enough, one supposes… but the moment you enter the room you will find reality swims all around you and all of a sudden you’re stuck in a school nightmare!
You know the kind. You’re late for class, no matter how fast you run. You’re in gym class, trying to climb that goddamn rope. You’re getting your books dumped. You’re naked and giving a book report.
These could be memories, but it’s just as likely that they aren’t - you and another person are just trapped in this cliche together. Whichever one of you is in the audience role could maybe help the other one out? Get them some pants or something? Yeah.

scavenger hunt
I think the point is that it's ambiguous. It leaves you more wiggle room. The first two are fairly straight-forward, at least.
[ She extends her hand. ]
I'm Dorothea, by the way. What's your name?
no subject
He glances at her hand when she offers it, then takes it in his own gloved one to give it a simple, smart shake.]
Tighnari.
[The way he looks at her, his bright eyes set in somewhat delicate-looking features, shows a clear and open curiosity.]
The first two should be easy enough to square away. Then some thought can be given to the second. Shall we move along?
no subject
[ Instead of letting go of his hand, however, she tugs him along down the lane between two rows of trees, snapping a picture of him and their joined hands. ]
All right. Now we've got one down, three to go. [ She lets go of his hand and they head into the orchard together. ] And I'm sorry about earlier--it was rude of me to stare at you like that. I've just never seen anyone like you where I'm from.
no subject
[He falters when she so abruptly drags him along, offering a token resistance to it and a blankly passive expression as she snaps the photo without any further words. When she lets go of his hand he pulls it up to his chest and curls the other around his wrist for a moment, frowning a little.
A moment later he's following after her, one of his large ears swivelled slightly in her direction. People staring at him isn't new, and nor is people never having seen anyone like him. Nor, unfortunately, is people dragging him around for photos.]
I understand. [Tighnari says, his arms loose at his sides now.] People who look like me are rare enough where I come from that I'm accustomed to being stared at. [Though it doesn't mean he likes it...] But I appreciate the apology. I would appreciate it, too, if you wouldn't pull me around for photos like that.
no subject
Oh, goddess, I'm so sorry. I didn't even think--no, that's no excuse. I know how it feels to be an object of curiosity, and it's never pleasant. Here.
[ Fiddling with the device a bit, she manages to delete the photo, turning it to show him that it's gone. The photo scavenger hunt isn't all that serious; they can take other photos. ]
That doesn't make up for it, but I hope you can forgive me. I should've known better.
no subject
No forgiveness is necessary, you were only being friendly. [She wasn't to know about his past history with being pulled around for pictures. The other researchers at the Akademiya had rarely been given to self-reflection when it came to Tighnari and the idea that he might not appreciate being pulled around like some kind of novelty - whether it be because of his unusual appearance or his intelligence relative to his youth at the time.]
And I'm sure you won't do it to anyone else. [A lesson learned is worth it, in his mind. The young man smiles and offers his hand out to her.]
Shall we try again?
scavenger hunt
Despite the cool breeze, he's still dressed in a t-shirt and cropped leggings. At least his feet don't seem to be cold, by the way they still glow like hot embers, and his body radiates heat, too.
He peers over his new partner's shoulder at the list, pressing his lips together in concentration for a moment. ]
Not at all, the first two should be easy enough, and the last two... well, I guess it depends on whether it's subject to our discretion, or hers. We can at least get started, shall we find somewhere nice to take that picture?
no subject
(How does one ask a person why their feet appear to be on fire?)
But he's a practical person too, at least right now, and the forest watcher can appreciate that in anyone.]
Let's do that. The second two item can be more readily worried about once the first two have been dealt with. [His long ears swivel slightly as he casts his attention about for a likely spot.] I saw somewhere along the way here that will do nicely for an appropriate backdrop.
no subject
[ Zagreus recognizes that look in folks; he's been at this long enough to know that he looks a little odd, by most standards, but he still hasn't thought of a good way to bring it up in introductions. So he tends to just leave it until it becomes relevant. ]
I'm Zagreus, by the way. I haven't seen you around yet, have you just arrived?
no subject
That's right.
[And he offers his hand by way of greeting. He does have a tendency to just dive straight into a problem and forget the usual social niceties like this.]
I'm Tighnari. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. [Tighnari is not someone who is usually easy to overlook given his appearance, though he has seen many unusual individuals here already. That he's picked out as 'new' doesn't surprise him.] I'm still getting used to being here. There's a lot to take in.
no subject
It is quite a lot, especially if you're not used to some of the technology or the social standards. [ Case in point: Handshakes. ] I haven't been here very long myself, but this isn't the first time I've traveled to a new realm like this. Perhaps I can help somehow?
no subject
Hmm, I don't know about that. It isn't the surroundings I'm having trouble with. [Given he lives in a forest, being here is not so strange... at least when it comes to what things look like. He's accustomed to magic as well, so that isn't too peculiar either. Tighnari curls one finger close to his lower lip, his brow furrowing faintly in thought.]
If you could answer questions about the Fox, I would have some things to ask you. But I expect you're as clueless on that topic as I am.

So he decides to try to scavenger hunt instead, even though he doesn't really know how to use the relic effectively to take pictures yet. There's a learning curve.
Eren doesn't have animal features like some folks, but sometimes when the light catches him right, his eyes are too green, almost glowing. It's nothing, right? He doesn't notice it himself, and how could he? ]
Yeah. How do you decide what counts as truly beautiful?
no subject
[What Tighnari might find beautiful would not be the same as what his new companion finds beautiful, or what the person who gave them the list in the first place finds beautiful... but since no specifics were given, he can only assume that it will come down to what they view as pleasing and nothing else.
Which makes it easier... and harder, at the same time.
But there are two far easier things to tick off the list first. Tighnari gently taps the first two items with one forefinger.]
These two should be simple enough. Assuming you have no objection to physical contact.
no subject
I don't have a problem with it.
[ His voice is fairly flat because of how he is, but he means it. He actually enjoys casual contact, because he missed it for so long, but he's not good at voicing that. ]
I don't know how to take a picture with the Relic, though.
[ He's gotten more used to the tech, but even the idea of pictures is strange to him. He knows how to broadcast the video to the network, but not how to save any of that for later. ]
no subject
[Given that Eren has said he doesn't mind physical contact, Tighnari takes the initiative to move closer to him and hold up his own device. Taking a photo on it, once he had found the application to do so, was similar enough to a kamera in its method that he had been able to figure it out fairly quickly. Given Tighnari's height of barely over five-foot-five when his ears aren't taken into account, Eren may need to lean down a little.]
Here, you open this, and then press this button. [The long-eared young man takes his time as he demonstrates, taking a photograph of the apple trees in front of where they're standing.] And then it stores the picture here.
[His ears twitch as he looks up at Eren with a warm smile.]
Do you need to see it again?
no subject
He watches intently as Tighnari navigates through the process. Gideon had shown Eren some of how to use the Relic, but he hadn't even considered that you could take pictures that stay. He's fascinated by it. ]
I think I get it.
[ He takes out his own Relic and slowly repeats the process. His picture is a little off-centre, but it's not exactly rocket science to take one. ]
They just stay like this forever? Inside this…Relic thing?
[ WHAT. ]
no subject
I can't say anything as to the longevity of the data - I've barely just arrived myself. But it does seem to have a large amount of space available for these images.
[He expects that video recordings and other things might be able to be saved as well, but he hasn't spent that much time delving into the workings of these devices just yet. His tail swishes lightly behind him.]
If you think you have the hang of it already, then we can make a start with this scavenger hunt.

Ii apple picking
He hangs back at Tighnari inspects the trees and takes up a guard position. He knows researchers. The best way to keep them safe is let them do their part and he does his. He reaches inside himself and grips the bright wild magic that lets him change shape.
The shape of Dvalin would be best. If he needs it.] A note of warnings, things tend to be nothing like they seem here.
no subject
Tighnari is very capable of defending himself as well, if he has to, but two people can often be better than one in combat situations.]
I'm from the forests of Sumeru, Kaeya. Things are rarely as they seem there, either. [Not that he doesn't appreciate the warning, but he's already waiting for Something to happen.] These weapons... what purpose do they serve here? A monument, or a warning?
no subject
[He draws up what he knows of Sumeru in his head. Only bits and pieces from books and researchers. The things required of a knight captain to know.
Anything else Lisa tends to say if it is needed. He lets his hands fall open and ready to pull his magic into a solid weapon. The trees rustle and a couple fruit looks loose as if they will fall soon.]
no subject
[His ears immediately turn towards the sound of the rustling above them. He cocks his head, looks up, and takes a few steps to the left. One of the red apples drops and Tighnari catches it before it hits the ground.
Well. That seemed relatively painless.]
This is--
[Wait. What's that hissing sound?]
no subject
He steps lightly. Thick black snakes burst up out of the ground. Icy magic churns out of him forming into a sword in one hand. For now this is the best way he can support his companion.] Well, at least it isn’t buzzards or slime monsters this time.
no subject
[Tighnari comments this calmly as he swiftly darts his attention around until he finds an old bow sticking out of the ground with a handful of arrows. Terribly convenient, but he isn't going to look a gift sumpter beast in the mouth, so to speak.
He grabs it and tests the string. The Dendro Vision attached to his clothes brightens as green energy wraps itself around the arrows.]
Dendro and Cryo... not the best of combinations for reactivity. [It doesn't seem that he's speaking to Kaeya there, exactly.] But I'm sure we can make it work. Right behind you.
