June 2022 Test Drive Meme

JUNE 2022 TDM
INTRODUCTION

[ TDM QuestionsJump to CommentsFull Navigation ]

Welcome to Folkmore's monthly Test Drive Meme! Please feel free to test drive any and all characters regardless of your intent to apply or whether you have an invite or not.

All TDMs are game canon. You can choose to have your TDM thread be your introduction thread upon acceptance or start fresh. Each TDM will provide a scenario for how characters arrive in-game that particular month.

Playing TDMs will allow characters to immediately obtain canon items from homes especially weapons or other things they may have had on their person when they were pulled from their worlds! There will always be a prompt that provides some sort of "reward" to characters who complete certain tasks.

Current players are allowed to have in-game characters react to TDMs via the Network or make a log with the prompts. Current players are always encouraged to tag new people on the TDM!

TDM threads can be used for spoon spending at any time by characters accepted into the game.

GOT THIS MUSIC IN MY MIND
Consciousness returns all at once, bringing with it the sound of water, the scent of wet wood, and the feeling of warm summer air. You are laying in a lounge chair near the head of a long wooden dock, one of many scattered along a small and pebbly beach. Other people rest on some of these chairs, dozing or waking up themselves.

In front of you a lake spreads like ink as the sun sets in the distance, turning the horizon into a riot of pinks and oranges. The water is still and dark, perfect for a little swimming, even if you don't have a suit. You can wade in, or walk down the dock and dive. If you're a little worried about going alone, you could see if anybody else is willing to take the plunge with you.

At the head of the dock where it rejoins the land, someone has placed a pastel boombox. It's playing a steady stream of synth music that really goes with the whole neon sky thing happening - it's like you woke up in a vapourwave wet dream! If only you had a saxophone!

The current song fades out and the DJ speaks up. Her voice sounds an awful lot like that of the fox that brought you here.

"Our next song goes out to a very special someone--" and to your surprise she says your name. What then plays is a song that is extremely special to you, whether positive or negative. Maybe it's from your first dance. Maybe it's the song that played on the radio when you said goodbye to someone you knew you'd never see again. Whatever it is, it cuts right to the center of you - you hear every note or feel every beat.

And it follows. The song will play on loop, growing louder and louder as it does. If you try to walk away, it somehow still plays - run into the woods to escape and you will still hear it echoing through the branches. Throw the boombox in the lake and another just reappears in its place. Plug your ears and you'll just hear it in your head, over and over.

How do you get rid of an earworm? Sing it aloud? Find another song? The DJ breaks in with a clue: "What an absolute banger! You'll want to share this one, folks!"

Yes, the only way is to get this song out of your head is to tell someone else about the memory associated with the song. The second you do, the song will stop looping, both externally and mentally

I KEEP CRUISIN'
If you get sick of the lake, a short walk down a path will take you to a little park. There are food stalls set up serving tacos, smoothies, yakitori, hot dogs, ice cream, somen, shaved ice... summer fare. All of the stalls are manned by humanoids with animal heads - at first you might mistake them for masks. But no, they really are animal people: roosters, chameleons, owls, panthers. They don't speak, and they're all very laid back, serving you in their own sweet time.

There are benches you can sit on. If the sun finally sinks behind the horizon while you're here, a number of soft lights in blues, purples, and pinks will turn on and keep the place illuminated.

Good thing, too, since the centre of the space is taken up by a skatepark. A kiosk nearby is renting out rollerblades and skateboards; if you're so inclined you can show off any skills you might have. Or maybe you'll just wobble along the pavement. The animal people will encourage you to skate in pairs if you're just learning, so you might meet some new people that way.

The vibe is chill, and even if you were upset when you first arrived you will find the longer you hang out the less anxious you feel.

I STILL KNOW

YOU SAY IT'S IN THE PAST

You've been awake for some time. Maybe you're getting something to eat, maybe you're exploring Willow and Euphoria. Whatever you're doing, some part of your body brushes up against an envelope. Really, it's like it jumps out at you. Written on the front is your name.

Inside is a piece of paper upon which is written a single statement: I know what you did last summer!

Well, that's confusing. And a little concerning, especially if you happen to have a lot of skeletons in your closet. Equally confusing is that someone nearby has found an identical letter, only addressed to them.

What's going on here? And could it have anything to do with that mysterious figure dressed like a fisherman hiding poorly behind a nearby object? Whoever that is, it seems doubtful that their intentions are friendly - you can see that in one hand they've got one hell of a big sharp hook.

The fisherman will stalk you and the other person who has received a letter, hiding quite a bit like a child; they duck behind skinny trees, crouch behind garbage bins, occasionally just place their hands in front of their already obscured face. Trying to approach the figure results in them raising their hook menacingly before running away. But they always come back. And although they may be inept, they do have a weapon. It may only be a matter of time before they catch you off guard.

You and the other letter recipient will have to work together to get out of this. The fisherman seems to think you were both in on something, so you should get to work figuring out if you have any experiences in common.

For some people this will be extremely easy. For others who may be from a different time period or planet, it may be a little more difficult. Still, there's bound to be something, whether profound or stupid. The moment you find some commonality in your past, you'll suddenly notice a box addressed to the both of you. How did it get there? Who cares!

Open in and you'll discover some canon items from home. It's especially likely that you'll find any weapons you may have owned, which is handy since the fisherman is now going to be after you in earnest!

After discovering what you have in common, it's possible that when you next see the fisherman they will be revealed to be someone from one of your stories. For example, if you both spent a year in Mathletes, the fisherman can be revealed as that nerdy kid you totally beat at the regional championships. Or maybe the fisherman's face remains obscured.

Regardless of who lurks behind that dirty raincoat and hat, you have to deal with him! This can be accomplished in a few ways: by revealing his identity if he has one, by knocking him out and turning him over to a couple of bumbling cops who seem to exist solely for this little drama, or by killing him.

Harsh.

If you find a commonality and receive a weapon from home, it will work flawlessly. One hit and that fisherman goes down! At least it wasn't hard!

But what if you just cannot or will not find common ground with someone?

Well. You still have to take care of the fisherman, but it's going to take a while. He's very stubborn and just doesn't seem to stay dead or injured for very long. It will take at least three attempts to keep him down long enough that you can turn him over to the police or throw him in the lake or whatever it is you choose to do.

IT'S ALL GOOD

If you had not previously received an item from home, with the disposal of the fisherman you will now discover the box addressed to you and your companion. Inside you will find some canon clothes and items for each of you, although they will not be weapons. As it turns out, you do not need to have completed the you say it's in the past prompt in order to find one of these boxes as they are dotted around Folkmore and may be found simply by wandering around. It's most likely that you'll have found yourself in Epiphany or Willow, which means that you'll also be able to find yourself things to eat and drink with ease. Euphoria especially might be the place for a pick-me-up since the convenience store has slushies! Awesome!

Less common that the addressed boxes, and more likely to be in the rural areas, are unenchanted weapons sticking out of the ground. Swords, guns, shields, maybe some nunchuks... They're not magical, but they're useable. After all you've been through you might want to pick one of these up. But be warned: the second you take one of these weapons, you'll have to use it.

From the shadows cast on the ground, inky black heads suddenly rise. Just heads. On insanely long necks that twist and turn as the heads come for you, gnashing teeth as dark as night. They’re pretty easy to defeat - cut off the head, or destroy the shadows they originate from. You can also run away, but you better be fast! That’ll teach you to assume you can get anything for free!

If you did encounter the fisherman or one of those nasty snake creatures, you may be a little worse for wear. Never fear - wander around a little bit and you'll encounter some more of those mysterious animal-headed people, who will point you towards a first-aid station. You can be patched up there by a woman with the head of a fennec fox. She manages to look unamused, somehow. Still, you can hang out in the recovery area as long as you need to. It's likely that you'll find yourself resting near other people, and you won't be told to shush if you strike up a conversation.

Of course. I'm not cutting you out of my life, Steve, I just — I don't know if I'm the best fit for the Avengers anymore.

"Wow, I feel like I have to mark that as a strike against it right away," she replies good-naturedly. "I've heard wild animals at night before plenty of times, but I'm hoping for the best place I can find here, so it's all right to be a little choosy, isn't it?"

Gemmaline lets him set them on the path as she contemplates what she'll actually put in her house. A few sets of clothes, food, and... what else? What do people put in houses?

"To you, coming from the place you do, does it seem strange I've never had a permanent home before?"

That totally makes sense, ahaha!

[ You couldn't be friend with anyone but party people if you only met new friends at party! ]

Well, who knows. [She tilted her head.] I know I just said it's unlikely... But that doesn't mean impossible. Maybe you'll see them around soon.

[ Not that she was sure whether this was a good or bad thing, but. It was a possibility. ]

[ Monika followed her and looked at the food offered by the somen stand. It looked good...! She wasn't too familiar with those things, but she wasn't averse to trying new things, so long as they weren't stuffed with meat.

She nodded and smiled, albeit still forcefully so. ]

That looks good...!

[ There was a bit of an awkward silence. It did really feel like this could all be a normal situation. Just two girls having a fun moment in a festival... If it wasn't for the reality of their predicament.

After a moment, she finally broke the silence. ]

Thank you for, um... [She tilted her head down. She meant it. No one else had told her the truth.] All this.

"In books, hm? I'd be interested in seeing what sort of books you're reading then."

Steve, the more you scritch, the more he's gonna be your friend. And, despite her flirtatious nature, Vex is a girl that likes to learn, especially if there's a goal to it.

"Well, I could see that. Normal people do tend to venerate those that they think have "godly" abilities. On my world, those people are generally following one god or another and have been blessed."

She takes a long pull from her mug of ale before she addresses his last comment.

"That's not exactly impossible. A few of my friends are able to use an ability called Plane Shift, which takes us to other planes of existence that are tangentially connected to our world. And we have items that are attuned to our world. We're hardly the first."

Just the best.

"Everyone's got abs, huh? Try telling that to a Teletubby." He lets out a slight roll of his eyes when Steve comes over to help him with the removal of his jacket, muttering something about how he can do this on his own, grumble, grumble, but he lets him tug it off because that one sleeve is definitely stuck.

"You even have to put any actual work into, you know, being you?" Because Tony actually needs to work out in the gym to maintain his physique. That, and he drinks a ton of superfood smoothies, sometimes skipping out on his meals, to drink just that because who has time to chew on actual food when there's so much work to be done. Which is something else he's going to have to get used to, what with not having his research lab here. It's weird. But hey, there's the issue of Steve's house. That foundation problem. He's going to get started on that the minute he gets to Steve's place. At least, get a site survey done, make a list of things they'll need to get, and depending on the total amount of spoons they have, getting hold of what they need is likely going to be the thing that slows down the progress of their work. At this point, it'll be difficult to estimate when it'll be done which isn't ideal. He gets stuck in his head for a bit as he's thinking about all of that; his tie's loosened, but he doesn't make a move to remove it just yet.

"Really? Witches are everywhere. Even with Miss Cordelia's announcement, I figure a whole bunch are gonna be too shy to come forward. 'Specially the older witches, like me." It was 2018 for her, too, the year that the voodoo demon and his little helper escorted her out of Hell.

And yeah, she'd have at least noticed reports of a very handsome, very strong man arriving out of seemingly nowhere. She paid more attention to the world than the world gave her credit for.

"I do hope so. Never had a cat of my own, she wouldn't have done well in th' swamps. They're beautiful, but they're no place fer a pet." And she tried to be sweet. Almost as a defensive shield against those who'd treated her badly in the past.

"Hm, then let's skip the Cruel Summer houses. I think the tiny ones are the next-closest thing. Wanna go see 'em?" he asks. "They're not all that roomy, but the tree houses I've seen are a bit flimsy. And the cottages are really far away from everything. Then there are the ones built into the ground - I live in one of those, but it's hard to stand up in for now."

"Sound kinda similar to what happened to my friend. He left my Earth a long time ago, but long story short he used some sort of rainbow bridge to get to it." Steve, that doesn't sound like plane shift at all, but it's okay, he's trying to relate.

"I've really gotta reconsider what's real and what's not," he says, patting Trinket on the cheeks as the waiter brings their ales and some food by.

"Does he eat, um... people food? Maybe we can get him some fish. Or. Honey?" Do bears actually eat honey?
pursuitofcappiness: (actually this is kind of familiar)

"This place seems like it'd be good for a cat. Lots of space to roam outdoors, plenty of mice to hunt." She could get one, if she wants. Steve would support that dream.

"I never knew how many versions of earth there could be," he says. "But there are a few I've already encountered. Shame, would've liked more than one witch on mine. Sometimes..." he doesn't know if he should be telling her this, because it's not really his business, but Wanda's not here. "Sometimes I think the one I know is a little lonely being the only one we know. I try to be supportive, but it's not the same."

"Tiny is absolutely fine by me. It's good of you to take note of all these things I might not like in a house. I'm so out of my element here." And it's not like she hasn't been metaphorically thrown into the deep end more times than she can count, but having someone to bounce ideas off of is a boon she won't soon forget.

"What made you choose an underground house if you knew you would have to reshape it so?"
pursuitofcappiness: (yeah that sounds like a plan)

[personal profile] pursuitofcappiness 2022-07-13 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What on Earth is a teletubby? Nevermind, Steve doesn't really want to know. And now Tony's asking about his workout regimen. "Yeah, I do, actually. It's more like, my body thinks I do. I know I can survive without it, but I still feel hunger and I still need to sleep. So. I still get all this energy I've gotta burn off by working out." Which is the opposite problem that most people have.

Steve notices Tony's gone off in his head about something, so he helps him take off his tie and carefully fold it. "You got your buttons, Stark, or you want me to do those for you too?" he asks, gently ribbing him. "Know we got a discount, but we are paying by the hour."

And, of course, Steve has a terrible ulterior motive for wanting to get Tony's shirt off: he wants to assess his wounds. Tony's being stubborn about going to see a medic, but if Steve just goes along with the hot spring thing, hopefully it'll work itself out.
solvabilities: (He isn't down to let that)

[ he relaxes a little. there's so much baggage still there and tony didn't want to overload him. ]

Thanks, Cap.

But look, no matter what, I'll always be your backup.

As far as Tony's concerned, the worst of his injuries was that dislocated shoulder of his. Everything else he can handle. He's stubborn like that. He knows Steve's not here because of the spoons, but because he's genuinely concerned which he thinks isn't necessary. He's a grown man.

So here's an idea. Tony decides to mention to Steve that he's going to need more ice, in a bowl this time, about this size, being very specific, and he figures the Cap will go get him that because he's just that kind of a guy, and it's how he'll give him the slip. Tony will leave Steve a sticky note on the locker telling him that he's gone to look for a masseuse, insert smiley face, and to text him the location of his home for that site visit later.

Typical.

He shrugs. "Reminded me of a book I read with my best friend, when we were younger." There's a lot more to say, but he'll leave it at that.

And then they went and looked at some really neat lil houses.

The implications, that Gela too has been forced to kill, angers Breq. It raises the tide of her ever present anger. She never wishes someone to understand that circumstance so dearly. She never excuses her actions when she comes face to face with those subject to that violence, even if the particular hand was someone else's.

The reaction to something makes Breq turn and raise her armor, expecting an attack. A shimmery silver layer rests barely above her body and clothes. Their stalker, such as it is, stands behind a too narrow tree, the hook angled out like a tree branch. A quick rotation reveals no other danger. Breq yet again dislikes her blind spots.

All that's revealed is a small box, nearly invisible. Rather, it blends with the planter it is next to, a ripple against the pavement. Out of the way, out of sight. Despite the blending color, Justice of Toren is engraved into the box. Cautiously, Breq crouches and picks the box up. The color shifts, the brown of her gloves bleeding across its surface. Her heart rate speeds up.

The box opens to reveal what she suspects: a plain gun, unremarkable except for what it's capable of, with extra rounds of ammunition. Tucked in the lining are two memorial tokens: a plain gold tag with Awn Elming engraved & a two centimeter opal set in silver with Translator Dlique Zeiat Presger engraved. She immediately pins the first to the inside of her jacket. Out of respect, in another alien/human setting, she pins the second there as well.

She closes the lid and tucks the entire box behind her back. By the time it's done, the person with a fish hook sprints toward them. "Let me disarm them," Breq says, "If you're so inclined, you can join the violence after that. I have armor, you don't."

Rhys had enough alarm for the both of them.

"Wait, I need that!" He scrambled to grab his hat, expecting the worst as the sun hit his eyes. But surprisingly, it didn't hurt. He wasn't about to stare directly at the sun, but it just sort of felt... well, what he imagined normal people felt when they weren't blinded by it. His golden eyes blinked uncertainly.

"Is this the first step to getting wings? I can't handle wings, Marus, I have absolutely no business having wings..." His voice trailed off into a plaintive grumble as his new ears swiveled. Despite his pout, the way Marus was scratching there did feel good...

She shakes her head at him. "No, that doesn't sound like Planar Shift at all. That sounds more like Teleport Via Plants. A druid opens a portal in one large tree or plant and the other side opens to another large tree or plant on the same plane that they've touched or seen before. It's very convenient for traveling around the planet."

Trinket looks up with big, soulful eyes, hoping to con Steve out of all his food.

"He can eat people food, but I prefer not to let him. He's as omnivorous as you or I." Stop thinking her bear is Winnie the Pooh, Steve.
