He figures that nothing he could say would make this less awkward to explain, but on the other hand he does know what it's like to get caught up in something that he shouldn't have, and trying to explain it to someone who might consider themselves above that sort of lapse in judgment sounds like a nightmare. The reality is always more complicated for anyone who wasn't there, and he's very aware that he's missing a lot of context to this situation anyway. There's also the facet to this that's fascinating just because it's a glimpse into Steven's life, which seems like it's so drastically different to his own, despite their outward similarities. He could probably listen to Steven talk about literally anything.

But there's a part to this that he does understand, and it sobers his smile just a fraction — and, unknown to him, if that wasn't obvious then the flicker of iridescent color to his eyes would probably imply some deeper feelings stirring, if just for a moment. Even assuming that Steven was curious enough to ask, explaining his own last sort-of-serious situation would require a lot of explaining.
