"I don't mind," K replies as he gently squeezes Joi's hand in what he hopes is a reassuring manner; this is all new to him. "I'm sorry for worrying you." He stops short of saying 'it's nothing' because that would be a lie. But there's no sense spoiling her good mood and excitement right now.

In many ways, a hologram companion was ideal for him. They could share an emotional connection and companionship, while the physical aspects of traditional friendships, relationships have never mattered all that much to him. After all, he is not a pleasure model; the only intimacy he's ever been interested in is emotional. (And being surrounded by extremely amorous humans and having to clean up their bodily fluids at camp has definitely not made the concept of sexual intimacy any more appealing...)

Though he can't deny physical affection such as holding hands and kissing are a very nice bonus now. It will take some getting used to being touched without violence, which had been the extent of his physical interaction with others in their home universe and what he's come to expect. Something that he will probably have to explain to Joi whenever he inevitably flinches from being touched without warning.

"A unicorn, qilin, griffon, different kinds of dragons..." He hasn't been idle here, channeling his loneliness into experimenting and academic pursuits at every opportunity. "But like you said. I think I like the way I am now." He has always been forced to be what others want him to be. There's a certain bitter irony in the fact that appears to be the role Familiars are expected to serve here as well.

Patches of fallen leaves are scattered across the path they're on, so he doesn't miss the opportunity to get a picture of Joi walking through them for the scavenger hunt. He can't help having a fairly single-minded approach to tasks, with it being a facet of his fundamental programming.

"Did you try any of the drinks at the kiosk?" he wonders. "If not, we should double back and get you something. Though the alcohol probably won't affect you, if you're like me in that regard." Immunity to intoxication aside, he thinks the sweet, season appropriate drinks would be a good place for her to start cultivating her taste preferences.
